THE POSITION
The STC Urban AHS Program Assistant/Bus Driver Position has three functions:
- Transporting children to and from the program, transporting families to and from program activities; and pick-up delivery of program materials.
- Working alongside the Teacher in offering play based / land based cultural programs; preparing the classrooms for daily activities, developing new materials, and assisting in planning/assessment work.
- Assisting the Home Visitor in offering a parent outreach program, preparing cultural / land-based program materials, and preparing the yard for cultural / land base learning for children and families.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drive either a 12-passenger school bus or a 15-passenger van to:
- Transport children between their homes and the AHS Program location, following the assigned time schedule,
- Transport families to and from program activities,
- deliver program materials to families, and pick up groceries/supplies.
- Interact with children to support their learning and development of social relationships with other children.
- Prepare, and implement daily activities (indoor/outdoor) based on the program’s curriculum planning, and in collaboration with the Teacher and Home Visitor.
- Provide activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, and problem solving appropriate to the development levels of the children.
- Work cooperatively as a team member through clear communication, problem solving approaches, participation in planning meetings, and following instructions.
- Perform other related duties as defined and assigned by the reporting Director or designate on an as required basis.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- ECE Orientation required, or currently enrolled in ECE Orientation classes;
- Valid Saskatchewan Driver’s License Class 4, “S” Endorsement, experience driving a school bus, and meets STC’s insurance requirements, or currently in the process of acquiring Class 4, “S” Endorsement Driver’s License;
- Minimum of one-year related experience in working with young children and their families;
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Safe Food Handling certification; First Aid, CPR and WHIMIS certification;
- Good written and interpersonal communication skills;
- Experience working with vulnerable populations;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, good problem solver;
- Dependable and reliable; have good work ethics;
- Willing to take additional training in early childhood development
- Knowledge of the political, social and economic objectives of the Saskatoon Tribal Council and of the Dakota, Cree, and Saulteaux cultures will be considered an asset.
OTHER CONDITIONS
- Must possess a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license, a reliable vehicle and meet STC’s insurance requirements;
- Must provide a current, original, Canadian Criminal Record Check (CPIC) with vulnerable sector search as a condition of employment;
- Minimum 3 years' safe driving experience.
- Clean driver's abstract.
- Excellent driving skills and habits; and
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, evenings and weekends, and to perform other related duties as required or assigned.
