Job Title: Director, Operations - Global Machines
Location: Bolton, Ontario
Reports To: COO
Job Purpose:
Husky is seeking a World Class Operations Leader for our Global Machines Operations. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively with senior level leadership as well as highly engage and inspire all levels of team members.
The Director is accountable for the Bolton and Shanghai Machines operations performance and its contribution to our overall business. The role has accountability for the daily operations including end-to-end order fulfillment, from order kick off through order shipment, leveraging cross-functional teams to deliver on our commitments.
This role requires a deep understanding of large assembly technologies and requires experience in leading both top down (in developing, driving/executing and communicating strategy) and bottom up (strong relationships through listening, understanding and connecting with shop floor team members). The Director works with peers, direct reports and senior leadership to contribute to the overall growth of Husky, advancement of assembly industrialization and has operations site management ownership of the plant including employee engagement, compliance, facility maintenance strategy and overall site representation.
The successful candidate will have a strategic vision and a history of applying their strategies to execution with the outcome of delivering and maintaining competitive advantage in operational capabilities including quality, commitment delivery, speed and efficiency through early thoughtful planning, rigor in execution, deployment and leveraging of systematic improvement initiatives and strong people leadership.
Responsibilities and Success Metrics:
Drives results in the metrics that matter
- Daily active management and direction of the Machines business to deliver on customer and Husky commitments. The three primary measures (KPIs) of performance are:
o Deliver every commitment right the first time through an obsessive focus on quality at the source
o Establish and maintain competitive advantage lead times while growing scale
o Ensure we deliver efficiently right the first time, faster, eliminating waste
- In addition to the metrics above, establishes and implements appropriate controls, processes and metrics for safety
Responsibilities
- Track and monitor production commitments and project performance through active management of KPIs
- Ensure quality at the source is delivered and this capability is maintained. A commitment made in quality is a commitment delivered. Quality must be built into our processes at each step and assured before leaving our plants. Right first time is the focus for all areas and a strong sense of ownership around this goal is our target.
o Supports and drives alignment through the Quality Management System with the Husky plants globally; ensures appropriate quality control plans are in place, and processes and products are aligned with the QMS.
- Sponsor and drive change management efforts to deliver on new product launch, team transitions, corporate initiatives, etc. and to deliver the target levels of improvement at the desired and scheduled date
- Demonstrates understanding of downstream and upstream activities, across the global scope of activities, and identifies where constraints exist across the business to ensure that both business and customer requirements and expectations are met. Capable and adept at working across boundaries to eliminate waste and find opportunity at the source, not only within their pillar of accountability
- Data driven, but practical. Doesn’t overanalyze before testing hypotheses and moving from the current to the desired state at speed.
- Prepare budgets, conducts cost conversion, and understands financial implications of capacity planning at plant level.
- Displays a strong understanding of assembly processes to proactively identify hazards, risks and opportunities and make decisions accordingly.
- Adept at systematics deconstraining of the business
- Responsible for plant strategy including but not limited to supply to demand matching (capacity), business continuity and capital project definition, deployment and ROI.
- Delegates tasks to ensure that others can deliver on requirements and determines when touchpoints are required.
- Skilled at developing talent through stretch roles, mentorship and guidance
- Embraces change by developing the strategy for the transition period and ensuring Leaders are equipped to drive forward the critical changes within their teams, across the organization, and externally to customers and suppliers.
Facilitate development of talent across the plant, and globally.
- Ensures training and development is an active and on-going activity to continuously increase our net talent pool and to create succession options and talent continuity within the operations teams. With labor as our most valuable resource, drive workforce planning to align with current and future needs.
- Actively seeks opportunities for team members to stretch and develop their skillsets in line with everyone’s personal development plans.
- Provides leadership to ensure that groups across the Operations are working effectively as a team and not operate in silos.
- Coaches and mentors all leaders on how to best simplify the business strategy and actions around the variables that drive results whether they be performance and/or employee bases actions.
Interacts with critical stakeholders internally and externally
- Leverages the control tower to plan supply of the operations to current and future demand, demonstrating early thoughtful planning to ensure the 3 critical KPIs meet target.
- Interacts with and engages the Supply Chain team to ensure business commitments are met
- Interacts with Sales and Solutioning to support the customer requirements and expectations.
- Interacts with the Customer Support team to support customer startups and close the loop on quality in the field.
- Work closely with Finance and Human Resources to ensure continuity, transparency and predictability in execution of business plans.
- Works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, sharing knowledge and process improvements.
- Clearly articulates key messages, adjusts delivery based on target audiences, both internally (executives, leaders, team members, etc.) and externally (customers, suppliers, etc.), and proactively communicate issues and risks based on the audience.
Drives continuous improvement initiatives
- Supports Managers, Team Leaders and Team Members in identifying continuous improvement, enables them to be successful, and holds the team accountable for delivering the desired value.
- Possesses a robust toolkit, including Kaizen, Lean, Six Sigma, Andon to guide Manufacturing Managers, Team Leaders and Team Members through the continuous improvement process.
Critical Capabilities:
- Strong understanding of End-to-End processes (from order to sale including solutioning, engineering, manufacturing, assembly, testing, packaging, and customer service processes).
- Relentless focus on quality at the source and closed loop quality performance.
- Understanding of constraint theories and how to deconstrain the business through E2E process optimization, information flow, automation, etc.
Education & Accreditations
- Post-secondary education or demonstrated competency through work experience.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment
- Experience in both high complexity/low volume and low complexity/high volume manufacturing operations
Related Experience
- Ability to demonstrate Environment Health & Safety principles.
- Strong financial and business acumen.
- Understanding of methodologies and techniques to enhance manufacturing operations.
- Ability to effectively communicate messages and adjust for different audiences
