Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH) is an 84 bed hospital located in Collingwood, Ontario (approximately 90 minutes north of Toronto) that serves more than 74,000 permanent residents and 3.5 Million annual visitors to the communities of Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, Clearview and the Blue Mountains. CGMH is an acute care hospital providing emergency care, diagnostic services including lab, imaging and cardio respiratory therapy, as well as two inpatient units (medicine and surgery). In addition, CGMH also provides care in specialty areas including obstetrics, orthopaedics, intensive care and surgery. The Hospital also provides out patient care including dialysis and a wide range of clinics including mental health and rehabilitation services. The Opportunity:
The Medical Lab Assistant performs a variety of tasks in assisting the lab technologists. Some of the core tasks include performing venipuncture techniques and collecting/preparing patient samples for lab analysis. Also, the Medical Lab Assistant will be responsible for maintaining inventory in the lab. The Medical Lab Assistant plays an important role in communication between the patient, doctor, and the lab. Other tasks include basic clerical duties & cleaning as well as assisting the lab technologists as needed.
Qualifications:
- Successful college completion of a Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant program
- Medical Lab Assistant Certificate
- Certified as a Lab Assistant by the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Professionals' Association of Ontario (MLPAO)
- Must strive to continuously provide a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff, physicians, and volunteers
- Must adhere to the duties of workers, as stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Must have an ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) in the English language in order to provide excellent communication with team members, patients and families. Ability to communicate in additional language(s) is considered an asset.
- Must have basic computer skills
- Must be dedicated to professional growth & development
- Must be able to perform all bona fide and essential duties of the position, which may include physical demands such as moving/transferring patients, pushing, pulling, bending, etc.
- Must have demonstrated excellent attendance/performance record
- Excellent organization and prioritization skills
- Ability to work independently and effectively communicate with other members of the health care team
Preferred
- One year related work experience in a lab setting preferred
- Phlebotomy experience an asset
- Medical clerical experience an asset
- Meditech experience an asset
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collects blood samples
- Sample preparation for analysis e.g. separation, numbering, referral samples
- Set-up of supplies, equipment, etc.
- Reagent preparation
- Smear preparation- e.g. blood films
- Staining of smears
- Cover slipping of smears
- Planting and streaking of microbiology specimens and controls, including set up of anaerobic and CO2 jars for reading by a MLT
- Sub culturing of stock cultures in Bacteriology
- Titrations of a pH meter
- Urinalysis (excluding microscopic)
- Recording quality control results for interpretation and approval by qualified staff as listed above
- Operation of automated instruments after proper functioning has been established by MLT’s e.g. glucometers
- Set up of erythrocyte sedimentation rates
- Set up of serology test, e.g. occult blood, pregnancy tests (need to be read and interpreted by a MLT
- Routine equipment maintenance
- Temperature monitoring of thermally controlled equipment
- Instruct patients in sample collections
- Aids in preparation of lab samples for analysis
- General clerical duties, e.g. transcription checks of results from worksheets to reports, filing or records, retrieval of records
- Preparation of kits
- General cleaning of the lab/equipment, housekeeping
- Assist lab technologists as needed
- Understands and performs duties in accordance with the policies, process and procedures of the Quality Management System (OLA Accreditation Requirements)
- Adhere to Patient and Occupational Health & Safety responsibilities
- Performs all duties as may be assigned

Start Date: In line with next Hospital Orientation intake.
Hours of Work: 8-hour, 10-hour shifts. Days, nights, weekends. Please be reminded that as a Hospital, in order to provide the necessary patient care, our operations run 24/7. Therefore, depending on the program for which you are applying, it may be an expectation that you are available to work weekdays and weekends, as well as all shifts - days, evenings, and nights.
Wage: $27.85 - $32.11
