Friends of Ruby (FoR) is dedicated to the journey and well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, aged 16-29 through mental health services, social services, and housing. FoR offers Youth Mental Health services, a Youth Drop-In Centre, and a Transitional Home. The Centre provides access to barrier-free counselling and therapeutic groups, case management and a drop-in space with hot meals, community, and comprehensive programming. The Home provides transitional and emergency housing, as well as mental health and life-skills to support youth moving towards independent living.

Position Summary

We are looking for a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to be our next Residential Housing Worker (RHW) to support the organization's efforts towards providing progressive support to 2SLGBTQIA+ youth including those with intersectional identities of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC). The RHW is responsible for the facilitation of life-skills workshops, responding to escalating situations when needed, applying and verbal de-escalation and crisis prevention techniques in defusing potentially volatile situations. The RHW will connect youth to support and resources to end homelessness by offering rental subsidies, emotional support, system navigation, coaching, and crisis support. This role will support youth to identify, activate, and enhance natural support in their lives.


Friends of Ruby uses individualized coaching to help increase resilience and improve life skills in the areas of personal safety, accessing resources, housing and basic needs, interpersonal and communication skills, identifying and achieving personal goals, connection to school and/or employment, and increasing optimism for the future. This position will provide support, engagement accessing services from Friends of Ruby at the Transitional House, while working collaboratively with other health and human service providers.


The successful candidate should have an understanding of substance use, mental health and harm reduction gained through direct experience working with marginalized individuals, providing support through an Anti-Oppressive Anti-Racist, strength-based, client-centered and trauma-informed lens, preferably to 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. They should also be able to handle high-stress situations and effectively use crisis-prevention and de-escalation techniques.
