POSITION: Youth Addictions Counsellor {Know the Deal/Days Ahead}
LOCATION: This position is part of the ADAPT hybrid model of operation and is a combination of remote work and in-office/community/partner sites work
This position will be classified as a permanent with hours of work at
1.0 FTE = 37.5 hours Sep to July – Sept and at 0.6 FTE = 22.5 hours July - Sep

SUMMARY
The Know the D.E.A.L. Program is a partnership program with the Halton District School Board (HDSB) and Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB). The program is funded through grants from the Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills United Way(s). The incumbent provides clinical services to clients by providing clinical assessments; maintains client records; develops and delivers educational and life skill group programming; provides statistical and anecdotal input for the evaluation of ADAPT programs as required; represents the Know The D.E.A.L. Program with community groups, as requested.
The Days Ahead program will deliver clinical services to Clients of ADAPT’s Days Ahead (Youth) Program by providing clinical assessments, developing, and implementing clinically sound treatment plans; maintains client records; represents ADAPT with community groups, as requested.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Know the Deal Program
- Develops and delivers all Know the D.E.A.L. Program components, as outlined in the United Way service agreement
- Follows protocols contained in the Halton District School Board and Halton District Catholic School Board professional Services Agreements
- Develops and maintains all program materials, meeting the specific requirements of each community partner
- Provides program-related 0support and consultation to all community partners
- Responds to all enquiries regarding the program in a timely and effective manner
- Provides clinical and administrative intake services for all program clients
- Delivers the psycho-educational group programming, as required
- Conducts appropriate case management services
- Provides program-related support to any collateral participants (i.e. parents, special populations, community colleagues)
- Maintains accurate and complete clinical records and service tracking data according to guidelines established by ADAPT, the MOHLTC and/or the funding agency
- Represents the program and the agency through marketing/promotion
- Provides community awareness and education, as appropriate
- Supports the Director of Operations in providing program reports/statistics, as required by the United Way
- Attends ADAPT Youth Team Meetings and other meetings, as required
- Assesses clients’ need and may refer clients to other appropriate support services and agencies according to the clients’ needs
- Provides input into the operational and strategic planning related to ADAPT programs as required
- Assists in maintaining a high level of open and effective communications within the organization
- Provides other services according to the conditions of program funding
- Participates in committees as required
- Participates in performance evaluations as required
- Participates in clinical supervision sessions as required
- Participates in professional development activities as required
Days Ahead Program
- Assesses client needs through the use of diagnostic tools and structured interviews
- In consultation with the Client, develops an individual Treatment Plan for the Client
- Provides individual and/or group counselling to address the Clients’ needs
- Conducts group sessions as required
- Refers Clients to other appropriate support services and agencies according to the Clients’ needs
- Conducts appropriate case management services with respect to the Client’s treatment plan
- Provides consultative services to community agencies, professionals or individuals as required
- Maintains accurate and complete clinical records and service tracking data
- Assists in the promotion of ADAPT and its programs to other agencies and the general public
- Participates in meetings as required
- Provides input into the operational and strategic planning related to ADAPT programs as required
Job Specification
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the minimum knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to enter the position.
EDUCATION
- College diploma/University degree in health or social sciences;
- Addictions and Mental Health/ Concurrent Disorders post-graduate diploma is an asset;
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
- Registered Social Service Worker is an asset;
- Current CPR and First Aid certification is required.
- ASIST training or equivalent is required.
- CPI training is required.
- GAINS certification is an asset.
RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE
- 1 year of relevant experience, working with youth up to the age of 24;
- Experience in:
- Individual, family, and group therapy
- Community development and networking
- Record keeping and file management
SKILLS:
- Basic life skills counselling, supportive counselling, crisis intervention, advocacy, and group work
- Managing clients with complex needs in varying stages of change
- Strong communication and active listening are required
- Ability to research current trends, discern factual information and incorporate into program
- Ability to effectively present complex clinical information in writing and verbally
- Ability to read and understand documentation such as operating instructions, procedures manuals and complex clinical reports.
- Broad knowledge of addictions treatments and explanatory theories, mental illness, and community resources.
- Ability to: function independently, maintain effective working relationships with others, work effectively under pressure or deadlines and work outside regular office hours as required, use good judgement to make sound decisions
- Interpersonal skills that require an attention to detail and rapport building with clients
- Experienced sense and awareness of ethical boundaries and clinical reporting obligations
- Active time management and scheduling
- Proficiency with computer programs and electronic database(s)

WORK CONDITIONS
- Working in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions;
- Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
- Various physical actions of mobility are required (minimal lifting, sitting for periods of time, moderate wrist motions)
TRANSPORTATION
- To successfully fulfill the duties of the role, a current valid driver's license and regular access to a dependable vehicle is required.
