Job Description
St. Leonard's Place Peel is a community based residential program that provides a place of safety, belonging, dignity, nourishment and education for homeless men with serious mental illness and those who have been in conflict with the law.
Reporting to the Supervisors of Operations, the Residential Support Worker (RSW) is responsible for providing care to residents in accordance with the organization's philosophy and goals & objectives. The RSW assists residents to meet their physical, emotional, and psychological needs that facilitate independence. The RSW performs duties such as assisting residents with personal care, providing access to medication, assisting with meals and snacks, transporting residents, and maintaining facilities.
Key responsibilities include:
Client Care
- Work collaboratively with Care Coordinators to provide high quality care for residents according to the goals and objectives outlined in their care plan
- Engage and Interact with clients and document client engagement and client interactions according to SLPP’s documentation standards
- Reinforce the values and policies outlined in the agency's ROAD document
- Support clients in preparing for and attending internal programs and other requirements in their daily schedules
- Provide clients with access to their medications in accordance with the agency’s medication access policies
- Manage client incidences through the use of Non-violent Crisis Intervention/UMAB techniques
- While maintaining professional boundaries, build rapport with clients by showing interest in their daily lives
- Maintain professional boundaries with clients at all times
- Provide meal support
Quality Assurance / Health and Safety
- Enforce and hold clients accountable to all agency health and safety policies and procedures
- Conduct fire, hygiene and other health safety tours as part of SLPP’s daily quality assurance and risk mitigation plan
- Document critical incidences immediately and according to agency guidelines
- Monitor security cameras of the internal and external property of the agency and immediately report safety breaches
- Ensure the daily adherence of community maintenance and chores by residents
- Monitor visitor access and maintain high security awareness at all times
- Maintain client files in accordance with Correctional Services Canada, company policy and audit control guidelines
- Follow arrival and discharge procedures for each client
- Facilitate CSC curfew, travel permits, and sign-ins according to policy
- Facilitate new arrivals and discharges according to agency policy
- Facilitate room searches according to agency policy Administration / Professional Development
- Input client information into the Pirouette data management system
- Complete shift log after every shift
- Provide secondary clerical and administrative support
- Manage CSC phone lines
- Monitor and record client calls ins for all residents
- Track resident curfews and immediately report breaches
- Actively participate in team meetings, town hall meetings and required training
- All other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Graduate of a recognized Social Service Worker or Criminal Justice Studies program; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
- Experience in database management software (ex. Pirouette) and in the administration of assessment tools
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite software
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- A demonstrated experience dealing with the offender population and individuals with serious mental illness
- A demonstrated ability to understand the dynamics of offender behaviour and assess their needs and risks
- An ability to understand the use of authority in supervision and to intervene effectively in crisis situations
- Able to understand diversity and cultural differences
- Familiarity with the dynamics of offender behaviour and sensitivity to their needs
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean driver’s abstract
- Current CPR/First Aid certificate
- Current medical assessment and clearance to work in a residential setting
- Clear Police check and approved Corrections Canada Enhanced Reliability clearance
- Skills in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing
