THE ROLE
Position: Security Guard – Cape Breton Highlands National Park – Campground Kiosks and Evening/Overnight Patrols
Competition Number: CNS 17-03-2023a
Location: Ingonish and Cheticamp
Reports to: Site Supervisor
Working Hours: Two Part-Time positions (one in Ingonish; one in Cheticamp) and One Full-Time Position in Cheticamp for the 2023 Season (June-September 2023). Historically, 8-hour evening/overnight shifts six days/week; subject to change based on Parks Canada requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of this role may include, but are not limited to:
- Responsible for the provision of reception services
- Responsible for providing information to the public, customers, and guests
- Responsible for the provision of evening/overnight security services
- Responsible for routine security patrols of campgrounds and surrounding park areas, trails, and facilities
- Responsible for the completion of daily/nightly prevention reports
- Responsible for recording and reporting all violations of National Park regulations
- Responsible for initial response to CBH National Park emergencies
- Ensuring the health and safety of self and others in the workplace
WHO WE’RE SEEKING
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must:
- Be aged 19 or older
- Be a Permanent Resident of Canada or Canadian Citizen
- Not have a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted
- Be able to provide fingerprints and complete a criminal record check
- Be eligible to apply for and successfully obtain a Government of Canada Enhanced Reliability Security Clearance
- Be able to communicate effectively in English (the ability to work in both official languages would be considered an asset)
- Be in possession of a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and provide a recent Nova Scotia Driver’s Abstract
Qualifications and Skills
The selected candidate will be a professional and detail driven individual with a strong work ethic and “Can Do” attitude.
Key qualifications and skills to be successful include, but are not limited to:
- Mental alertness with an ability to:
- react calmly, quickly, and appropriately in any crisis
- concentrate and remain alert for up to 12 hours
- focus on the accuracy of money denominations, and ensuring the quality of service in collecting/redistributing monies
- demonstrate problem-solving and sound judgement
- Physical fitness with an ability to:
- stand or sit for prolonged periods of time and the ability to walk extended distances in order to conduct security patrols of the park
- Superior attention to detail with very good verbal communication skills
- Excellent customer service skills
- Computer literacy, and/or an aptitude to learn is an asset
- Strong mathematic skills (ability to quickly, and accurately calculate and distribute change to customers)
- Achievement of First Aid certification
- Successful completion of the Commissionaires Security Officer Course (online and/or in-class)
