This position is part of the dynamic Addiction and Mental Health Outreach Team which is based in the Regional Resource Center in Medicine Hat. The Mental Health Therapy Assistant is an essential member of a transformed, integrated, recovery-oriented treatment team. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Mental Health Therapy Assistant also provides interventions and essential support services to clients with Addiction and/or Mental Health disorders that are complementary to the work of Addiction and Mental Health treatment providers. This position works primarily within the recreation program at Addiction and Mental Health Outreach Services and supports both in patient recreation programming and community recreation. Responsibilities include assisting the recreation therapist with planning, organizing and facilitating a range of recreation group activities. The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of addiction and mental health disorders and have the proven ability to work with multiple stakeholders. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, assisting individuals in developing life skills, supporting an established treatment plan, supporting the recreation therapy program, crisis intervention, transporting and attending various appointments with clients, system navigation and referrals, maintaining client records and assisting in any of the Addiction and Mental Health Outreach programs as needed. This position will work to support the vulnerable population as well as clients receiving services from any of the Addiction and Mental Health Outreach programs.
As a Mental Health Therapy Assistant, you will assist with the provision of individual, group and recreational programming to inpatients and outpatients receiving Mental Health & Psychiatric Services. Community support staff enabling adults living with mental health issues to experience supports. You will fulfill four key roles: - Service Provider: Supports the patient/client and assists the therapist with direct and indirect client care and non-client service provision. - Collaborator: Works effectively with internal and external partners to optimize services. - Life Long Learner: Enhances competency and service through reflective practice and continuous learning. - Paraprofessional: applies professionalism and ethics to the provision of person-centered care and participation within the multidisciplinary team.

Required Qualifications:Completion of diploma in Social Services or equivalent may be considered. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Current First Aid certification. Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification (NVCI). Current Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). Must hold a valid Class 5 Alberta Operator's Licence.
Additional Required Qualifications:Minimum 2-3 years working in a community-based health care or human services setting with individuals impacted by addiction and/or mental health disorders. Knowledge of community resources relevant to client population is essential. Training in Non-violent Crisis Intervention and suicide intervention training required. Well-developed reasoning, problem solving skills, conflict resolution skills, and effective communication skills are required. Highly flexible and able to adapt when faced with competing demands. Ability to engage and support individuals with mental, physical and cognitive challenges. The successful candidate will have effective time management skills and demonstrate knowledge and skills in addressing crisis situations.
Preferred Qualifications:Previous experience working in recreation programming preferred. Previous group facilitation experience preferred. Please attach a resume and cover letter to be considered for this position.
