Youth Health Centre

What we do and why we do it:
The Alex Youth Health Centre provides comprehensive health services in a multidisciplinary team through a welcoming, accessible, confidential, non-judgmental and youth-friendly environment. The goals of the Youth Health Centre (YHC) are to provide integrated health, counselling, and social services to reduce barriers for youth aged 12 to 24 and to improve clients’ outcomes in the areas described above.
The Medical Office Assistant (MOA) supports the delivery of primary care services at The Alex in all Clinical Programs. As a team member this staff member is instrumental in facilitating communication between clients, families, and members of the Primary Healthcare Team. The (MOA) performs a wide range of tasks including administrative, front office and clinical work, related to direct client care. This position reports to the Clinic Team Lead.
What you will do:
- Coordinates patient care through the clinic
- Supports Primary Care Providers during health examinations
- Maintains electronic medical records- updates address, phone number, and other pertinent information during each patient encounter
- Measures vital signs (i.e. blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, height and weight, waist circumference, etc.) on each patient and records information in electronic medical record
- Shares information gathered from patients with appropriate team members to assist in more comprehensive care of the patient
- Schedules patients for tests and follow up appointments
- Cleans and sterilizes beds and instruments following universal precautions and best practice guidelines
- Prepares examination rooms; selects, sets up and maintains medical supplies and equipment for all examinations and procedures
- Maintains inventory, laundry and other materials, as required
- Participates in team and staff meetings, as requested
- As requested by a physician or other clinical staff, obtains reports, consultations, diagnostic imaging results, health records, etc. from various care providers and institutions
- Answers the telephone, screens and relays messages to patient and staff, greets and directs patients and families
- Provides data entry, photocopying, faxing and filling services
- Provides ongoing assistance to nursing, medical and other Alex staff concerning the administrative and procedural workings of the health centre
- Assist in data collection and entry as required
What you bring:
- Medical Office Assistant Certificate
- Minimum two years’ experience in a medical office environment
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Excellent computer skills
- Ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities
- Ability to pay attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work with a marginalized population that struggles with homelessness and/or poverty
- Ability to work independently and effectively with members of a multi- disciplinary team
- Awareness of HIPA and FOIP
- First Aid (either Standard/Intermediate or Emergency/Basic) - Level C CPR within 30 days of hire date
- Satisfactory vulnerable sector police clearance and child welfare intervention check
- Knowledge of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRC) 94 Calls to Action an asset
Working Environment:
- Main Building (2840 2nd Ave SE)
- FTE (37.5 hours/week)
- Standard hours 9:00am – 5:00pm Monday-Friday
- Continuous extended periods of sitting, standing, and walking (sometimes up/down stairwells)
- Occasional physical action, and requires the ability to bend/crouch, reach above shoulder height, kneel/crawl, and carry objects (up to 20 lbs.) throughout shift.
