Job Summary:
The rewards are as plentiful as a Community Mentor in the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Support Program. You will be joining an established Agency that is guided by faith to care for and bring hope to people in need with humility, compassion and respect. With more than 50 years of service delivery, Catholic Social Services is one of the largest multi-function social services agencies in Canada, with more than 1600 staff and 2000 volunteers delivering 130+ programs through Central and Northern Alberta.
The Community Mentor will be responsible to provide direct outreach support to individuals who are suspected of or diagnosed with FASD. Support includes; providing emotional support and information to promote understanding and assisting with strategies for the individual and their support network to cope with challenges faced as a result of FASD. This will often include hands on education such as establishing routines, modeling life skills and appropriate social interventions, management of child/adult development and coping strategies. Providing direct Support to family/caregiver to discuss presenting issues that they may be experiencing in dealing with the individual in their care. Providing assistance in accessing essential services and a variety of community resources. Other duties will include creating and maintaining case files in a confidential manner, acting as a point of contact for various support service agencies and as an advocate for the client.
The successful candidate may be required to have flexible availability for hours outside of a standard work day.
Skills and Abilities:
- A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong knowledge of community resources.
- Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel and Outlook required.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team within a large organization.
- High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability.
- Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Politically and culturally sensitive.
- Experience and knowledge in the area of addictions and mental health.
- Experience and knowledge in home visitation an asset.
- High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
- Strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to privacy.
- Must be able to be depended upon to plan and organize work effectively and ensure its completion.
- Program planning and development skills an asset.
Education and Qualifications:
- Degree/Diploma or Certificate in Human Services (or equivalent)
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working with individuals and families.
- Experience supporting individuals with complex and high behaviours.
- Strong crisis intervention skills
- Valid First Aid and CPR
- Vulnerable Sector Check issued by RCMP or City Police
- Child Intervention Record Check
- Clear and current driver's abstract
- A vehicle and valid class 5 driver's license – requirement to transport clients in your personal vehicle
- Proof of vehicle insurance showing $2 million liability coverage
- Proof of Vehicle Registration for insured vehicle
