Educational Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Health Care Aide Certification from a school recognized by Alberta Health Services
- Geriatric experience preferred
- Current First Aid/CPR certificate
Position Requirements
- Basic understanding and genuine interest in caring for elderly and working in a geriatric environment.
- Practical experience with seniors; patience and tactfulness in relating to residents, family members, volunteers, visitors, physicians and the general public.
- Ability to observe and report physical and emotional changes in resident’s condition.
- Willingness to perform a variety of simple, repetitive tasks.
- Knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in assisting residents with their activities of daily living.
- Willingness to accept supervision and direction from supervisory personnel.
- Commitment to confidentiality of residents, their status, and medical records.
- Ability to get along with co-workers, demonstrate integrity, and posses a positive caring attitude.
Essential Functions
- Ability to give and receive oral and written instructions in English.
- Ability to complete required documentation including: daily progress notes for each resident for each shift.
- Follow Medication Administration procedures and record correctly in M.A.R.
- Be aware of medication delivery schedules for each resident and notify the family and/or supervisor when medications need to be reordered.
- Be aware of expiry dates on all medications.
- Be willing to problem solve on the resident’s behalf and to use common sense at all times.
- Bring unresolved issues to the attention of the supervisor for immediate follow-up.
- Read all communication from the supervisor and fellow Assisted Living staff.
- Physically capable of turning, stooping, bending, stretching, moving equipment and performing other related tasks.
- Ability to effectively communicate in English with residents, speaking clearly and at a voice level that each can hear.
Position Responsibilities
- Assist in personal care as outlined in each resident’s care plan including: stand-by shower assist or full hands-on shower assistance; peri-care and incontinence management; therapeutic tub assistance; application of lotions with rub; application of support hose; application of medicated ointments or lotions; washing of hair; oral care; denture care; assistance with hearing aides.
- Assist in dressing residents giving consideration of the abilities of the resident, allowing them to do what they can unassisted.
- Make beds, tidy living spaces, collect and dispose of garbage, hang clothing, wash out stockings, open and close blinds or curtains, as resident requests, and allows and as specified by the resident’s care plan.
- Escort to/from meals, activities, appointments within the building.
- Share calendar events with the residents daily to promote community integration and encourage socialization.
- Assist residents to carry out urine or occult blood (fecal) collection if they have orders from their physician. Notify chef of all dietary restrictions during OB collection.
- Be aware of resident dietary restrictions e.g. diabetes etc.
- Encourage residents to have regular meals and snacks. Arrange delivery of meals when resident is unable or unwilling to come to the dining room. Report to the supervisor any pattern of irregular eating.
- Report/record changes in resident’s health, skin condition, bowel/urination pattern or behavior or mental condition.
- Keep residents and their clothing and their environment clean and orderly, using all discretion and sensitivity when the resident has lost awareness of these issues.
- Treat the resident with incontinence with dignity. Dispose of soiled products and keep the resident’s skin clean and dry through scheduled toileting programs, as outlined in the care plan, or as needed. Notify supervisor and/or family of low supplies.
- Follow all universal infection control precautions.
- Care for the dying resident with compassion and as instructed in the care plan. In the event of a resident death, immediately notify the supervisor, 911 and follow Personal Directives.
- Attend regular in-service education as provided by Touchmark.
- Promote a safe work environment, and continually demonstrated safe and proper techniques (transfers, etc.). Report any problems or deficiencies to the A.L. Supervisor.
- Be professional and courteous when requesting assistance from housekeeping, maintenance, dietary, life enrichment and clerical staff.
