Space & Experiences (S&E) encompasses six large business units which reflect an extensive group of creative problem-solvers who support the U of T community by creating environments and experiences that enrich life at the University of Toronto. S&E operates undergraduate and graduate student housing on the St. George campus. These include Graduate House, Chestnut Residence, and Knox Residence with two new residences currently in development: Oak House and Harbord Residence. With an award-winning architectural design, Graduate House first opened in 2000 as the only residence on the St. George Campus dedicated to housing graduate and second-entry students at U of T in a suite-style environment. The 426-bed operation offers residents a tight knit community tailored to support grad students as they pursue studies in a wide array of disciplines.
Knox Residence is a historic building, opened in 1915. It houses 100 undergraduate and graduate students in a traditional residence style building.
Your opportunity:
Reporting to the Associate Dean, Residence Life, the Assistant to the Dean, Residence Life & Communication (ADRLC) oversees the recruitment, interview and hiring process of members of the residence life team, provides ongoing training, supervision and support to residence life staff, and develops and implements a variety of diverse programmes for groups and individuals to enhance the academic and social experience of Graduate House and Knox Residence residents.
The incumbent provides mediation and para-counselling for residents; investigates breaches of residence policy, chairs residence life staff meetings; and oversees the communication of performance standards and the evaluation of residence lifestaff performance. Along with the Dean, the ADRLC supports and advises the Graduate House Residence Council, the Residence Affairs Committee, and may address tour groups and represent Graduate House on university committees. The incumbent is required to live in an apartment in Graduate House, and to be available and responsive to frequent evening and weekend commitments in the role. The incumbent attends to after-hours emergencies/issues in conjunction with the Residence Life Staff and reports back to the Associate Dean.
The ADRLC coordinates the ongoing development and implementation of Graduate House’s and Knox Residence's integrated communication strategy, including planning of the annual communication cycle, creation and maintenance of departmental web content and social media channels, promoting the Graduate House community to current and prospective residents, and aligning Graduate House documents and communication around an integrated visual identity.
Your responsibilities will include:
Planning and overseeing the implementation of an evaluation framework for programs and initiatives- Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
- Facilitatingeducational workshops and seminars
- Interpreting and applying policies and procedures when making independent decisions
- Responding to escalated complaints using informal negotiation skills
- Directing the activities of a group of employees all performing a similar function
- Supporting communication and outreach activities
Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience (Masters degree desired)- Minimum (5) five years experience living and working in a University Residence or comparable setting, either in a similar position or in another residence life role
- Minimum (3) three years experience in para-counselling and mediation to support student needs and to create a positive living space for all residents
- On-call experience, preferably in a professional capacity
- Minimum (3) three years experience with residence program development and implementation
- Experience with program assessment and evaluation
- Minimum (3) years of experience supervising staff, preferably live-in student staff
- Experience with use of the StarRez software system
- Intermediate computer skills relating to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Forms)
- Demonstrated ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, empathy, sound judgment and discretion
- Excellent communications (oral and written) skills
- Strong organization and time management skills, with the ability to multitask and meet strict deadlines
- Skilled in managing emergency situations and student crises

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 13 - $76,284 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $97,556. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
