THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Vice President, People, Equity and Culture), the Director P,E&C is responsible for ensuring that human resources (HR) day-today operations, processes, policies and practices align with the organization’s values and strategic direction, with specific focus on building an equitable organization that fully embodies anti-racist, anti-oppressive and feminist values, principles and practices.
The Director is an experienced HR professional who leads a range of human resource functions and services, including recruitment & selection, on/offboarding, employee relations, performance management, learning and development, compensation/rewards and conflict resolution among staff. The Director is accountable for the development, implementation and evaluation of HR policies, programs and practices across the organization; provides the VP P,E&C with advice and counsel on employee-related issues and compliance with labour law legislation; and fosters a positive and constructive working relationships with all employees across the organization.
In addition to being an HR generalist and tactician, the Director brings a deep and abiding commitment to tackling systemic issues affecting historically marginalized employees and communities; helps to build an environment that reflects EF’s commitment to creating an anti-racist and anti-oppressive working environment, and promotes a culture of respect, equity, and fairness.
SCOPE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Human Resources Management and Compliance
- Leads and drives the day-to-day HR operations within EF’s Canadian and global workforce including but not limited to, compensation and benefits; recruitment and retention; onboarding and offboarding; domestic and global employment contracting; disciplinary matters, disputes and investigations; performance and appreciation management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety;
- Monitors and ensures the organization's compliance with provincial and federal laws and regulations; provides advice and counsel on labour and employment legislation
- Leads and supervises the work of the P,E&C Team (including a Manager, Coordinator and Assistant);
- Acts as a team and culture builder who values and instils diversity, equity and inclusion throughout all HR practices
- Acts as a trusted and respected colleague, providing HR counsel and support to managers and staff as requested.
People and Talent Management
- Builds strong and trusting relationships with all staff;
- Partners with people managers across the organization to thoughtfully plan and execute on talent/staffing needs which includes recruitment, onboarding, retention and succession planning;
- Supports managers in developing their team members through career pathing and proactively plays a leadership role to develop and implement a thoughtful succession plan for the organization;
- Manages organization-wide efforts to ensure that performance and appreciation management and quality improvement programs are developed and implemented Develops and implements learning strategies and programs to strengthen professional development and training programs for staff at all levels of the organization; incorporates organizational competency development strategies into learning and development plans;
- Serves as a resource for team leads and managers on employee relations issues, including conflict resolution and workplace employee investigations.
Strategy, Equity and Culture
- Contributes to and implements the organization’s HR strategy, annual plan and functions in alignment with the organization’s mission, goals and feminist values;
- Works with leadership to evolve and execute EF’s anti-racism, anti-oppression, diversity, equity and inclusion strategy;
- In partnership with senior leadership, supports the organization's commitment to build a culture that values diversity of experience and actively seeks to dismantle systemic issues that have resulted in underrepresentation at all levels, including senior leadership;
- In partnership with the VP P,E&C develops and implements strategies, policies and workplace practices and rituals that embody a feminist, agile and people centered organizational culture.
QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES
- Degree in Human Resources or Business Management with CHRL designation being a strong asset;
- Minimum 8 years in progressively responsible HR roles, with at least 5 years of experience managing staff, ideally in a non-profit setting. Equivalent combination of education, experience and/or professional certification will be considered.
- Demonstrated Human Resource experience in all aspects of the employee life cycle, including recruitment, contracting, onboarding, development, retention, succession planning, performance management, and compensation practices;
- Understanding of feminist principles, equity, anti-racism, mission-driven and non-profit cultures, organizational development, and change management, and their intersection with People & Culture practice;
- Knowledge of employment legislation including Employment Standards Act of Ontario, Occupational Health and Safety Human Rights legislation, as well as an understanding of HR legislation/requirements when working with a global workforce
- A strong track record of cultivating a high-performing team and fostering the team’s engagement, growth, and development;
- Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills, including high emotional intelligence and outstanding coaching and mentoring ability; exhibits an outgoing and approachable demeanor that enables building trust and respect;
- Demonstrated management and leadership skills working with various levels of staff;
- Experienced in conflict resolution and mediation skills;
- Flexible and adaptive, able to respond quickly and effectively to changing circumstances;
- Good working knowledge of HR management software, Enterprise Resource Planning systems, Google drive/sheets and excel;
- Tact, discretion and confidentiality;
- Commitment to the work and values of the EF, in particular the values of gender
equality and shifting traditional power systems.
