Job Position
We are currently seeking a highly motivated, creative, collaborative and entrepreneurially minded individual who is passionate about the skilled trades. Specifically, the ApprenticeSearch.com Part-Time Employment Specialist will create and maintain effective working relationships with small, medium, and large skilled trade employers, applicants, and communities within Ontario. They will be actively involved in service and program delivery for ApprenticeSearch.com, including seeking avenues and building relationships to increase employer and job seeker engagement with the platform.
Successful candidates will have client-facing experience related to non-for-profit stakeholder relations and/or job developing. This role is well-suited to an energetic and organized individual with strong written, verbal communication skills and a strong proficiency with using technology daily and learning new systems/platforms. Experience with the skilled trades sector is a strong asset.
Key areas of responsibility will include:
Job Seeker Support(s):
- Work collaboratively with job seekers using a person-centred approach, adding your creativity to uncover their strengths that they need to be successful in employment
- Assess applicants' needs, provide assistance on goal setting and outline steps required to achieve goals; Develop and employment effective coaching strategies to help clients overcome employment-related challenges
- Provide information on suitable skilled trades career paths based on participants' skills, qualifications, interests, and experience
- Reviewing clients' resumes and suggesting improvements as needed
- Screen and approve applicants for the ApprenticeSearch.com platform
- Assist in the development and delivery of ApprenticeSearch.com job readiness programs
- Developer and deliver professional presentation materials to deliver to individuals who are interested in or pursuing a skilled trades career
Employer Support(s):
- Support employers as they register with ApprenticeSearch.com, post jobs, search for applicants and hire.
- Collaborates with other members of the ApprenticeSearch.com to shortlist candidates for employers.
- Promotes ApprenticeSearch.com job seekers and assists employers to secure the most suitable candidate.
- Coordinates opportunities for employers to participate in ApprenticeSearch.com programs, including participating in employer panels, project advisories, experiential learning opportunities.
- Coordinates employers’ participation in ApprenticeSearch.com employment readiness and experiential learning programs, for example, hiring young people for subsidized entry-level positions or experiential learning opportunities.
- Maintains regular and consistent follow up through weekly contact with the employers to monitor their progress in hiring and onboarding candidates, or to gain updates on their participation in program opportunities.
- Identifies common issues and innovative approaches to support skilled trades employers in finding, hiring, and onboarding apprentices; and
- Tracks and reports on metrics.
Community Support(s):
- Attend employer/labour market seminars, job fairs and networking meetings to gather information and establish connections with potential employer users of the website.
- Prospect and establish relationships with employers and sector associations, in designated regions in Ontario, to promote hiring apprentices through the website; and
- Seek and conduct employer outreach/community relations opportunities to increase awareness of apprenticesearch.com and services.
Other duties could include:
- Assist with the development of creative and appealing employer marketing strategies to encourage employers to access ApprenticeSearch.com.
- Assist with the creation of employer resources.
- Identify areas of employer need to support the development of new proposals and projects; and
- Maintain performance related statistical reports.

- Ability to take ownership of projects and tasks;
- You have a strong desire to explore areas beyond your role and contribute to growing the company in any way it requires;
- Technological competencies (for example, a comfort in learning about and using a proprietary platform, ability to make simple website changes in a platform similar to WordPress, ability to generate reports using technology);
- Proven ability to work effectively under pressure, to be part of a team, to be responsive and to meet deadlines; and
- Interest and ability to work in a smaller-sized, not-for-profit organization.
Qualifications to succeed:
- Relevant undergraduate degree or diploma in Social Services, Career/Employment Counselling, Sales/Marketing or equivalent combination of education and industry experience.
- Experience in the employment field with a history of developing relationships with employers.
- Experience within non-for-profit organizations is an asset
- Knowledge and experience related to the apprenticeship system and the skilled trades in Ontario and other jurisdictions.
- A working knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), the Ontario Works Act, Employment Standards Act, and Human Rights Legislation.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and own a reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance, willing to do some travelling.
- Proficient in the use of computer software i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet; and
- Experience creating and delivering presentations.
Working Conditions
- We are looking for someone who will be able to work on Saturday and Sunday for roughly a 6-8 hour shift, depending on weekly deliverables. This position can expect to work a minimum of 20 hours per week and up to 40 hours per week. Exact days and times will be dependent on HIEC's schedule and needs, and may vary week to week.
- We would also be looking for this position to cover some evening shifts on ApprenticeSearch.com and offer some job coaching sessions to candidates who cannot meet during HIEC's standard open hours
- This role will be primarily remote with some requirement to meet in person depending on deliverables
- Required to travel within Ontario for presentations, partnership meetings, trade shows, conferences, etc. on an as need basis
