About this Job
Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Human Resources, the Human Resources Business Partner (the “HRBP”) works closely with a variety of stakeholders at all levels of the university across the campuses. The incumbent has special focus on offering personalized guidance, support, and solutions on a breadth of HR-related activities to the staff and faculty on the Orillia campuses, the Lakehead University-Georgian College partnership and the Thunder Bay campus. Lakehead is looking for an experienced HR partner who is skilled in employee and labour relations, recruitment, HRIS, performance management, occupational health and safety, compensation and benefits, and training and development. Furthermore, this position will serve as an agent of change with the ability to foster strong, meaningful relationships and offer forward thinking HR improvements to our current, high functioning team. This is a pivotal role on the Orillia campus and requires an individual with a collaborative nature who thrives in a “small-but-mighty” team environment.
Job Duties
- Provide advice and direction to supervisors on staff recruitment initiatives, performance management, discipline and terminations.
- In consultation with the Thunder Bay HR team, take an active and lead role with grievances, investigation, collective bargaining and disciplinary procedures, escalating to AVP as needed.
- Build and maintain rapport and strong working relationships across the University including with staff, faculty, student employees, union reps and leaders.
- Explain and interpret legislation regarding various HR policies and programs including Employment Standards, Human Rights and related items that pertain to recruitment initiatives, including but not limited to:
- Respond to all internal and external inquiries regarding employment opportunities
- Ensure the proper documentation is completed and submitted for approval as per the Recruitment, Selection, Hiring (Non-Academic) Policy
- Participate in applicant interview process and act as a advisor to the committee to ensure policy ad best practices are being followed
- Ensure appropriate documentation completed for hires, transfers and resignations
- Create shared understanding of HR policies and programs by communicating the HR services and resources available
- Coordinate or conduct one-on-one and/or group training sessions on issues pertaining to human rights/human resources
- Collaborate with Security Services regarding matters related to Occupational Health and safety and emergency response preparedness and activities
- Participate on campus projects and committees, providing HR perspectives and advice
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources or a related discipline
- 5-7 years of professional Human Resources experience in an advisory role
- Completion of a CHRL designation is preferred
- Experience in an academic setting is an asset
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, including tact and courtesy along with exceptional attention to detail
- Possesses strong knowledge of applicable legislation including the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong coaching, mediation and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions, adapt to changes and situations, and multi-task a variety of high priority duties under pressure of deadlines and frequent interruptions are essential
- Strong organizational, time management, problem-solving skills and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently with minimal direction and supervision in a fast-paced, dynamic environment is crucial
- Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks and adjust to shifting priorities.
