The Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy (ISUP) is the centre for research on teaching and learning at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). Established in 2020, ISUP advances the study of university pedagogy. In collaboration with faculty, staff, and students across UTM, we support the development of students’ academic skills through courses, consultations, workshops and programs. We also support faculty pedagogy and the scholarship of teaching and learning through programming and one-on-one consultations. These offerings are informed by our commitment to innovative, inclusive, and accessible pedagogy.
ISUP’s faculty and staff support the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC); the Teaching & Learning Collaboration; utmONE, utmONE Scholars, and Foundational Skills courses; and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).
Your opportunity:
Within ISUP, the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC) is a hub for academic skills development on the University of Toronto Mississauga campus. The mandate of the RGASC is to support and promote teaching and learning in a range of contexts across the University of Toronto Mississauga. For students, the RGASC is a resource for developing academic skills through individual appointments and group-based initiatives that help students identify and develop the academic skills they need for success in their studies. For instructional staff and faculty, the Centre is a partner in teaching and learning activities. These activities include course and program design, implementation and assessment of a given intervention’s impact.
Faculty and staff appointed to the RGASC have a range of specializations, including academic peer support, academic writing instruction, educational development, English language learning, numeracy, scientific literacy, and supplemental instruction. This diversity of experience and expertise enables the Centre to collaborate productively with partners from across the disciplines and campus, who bring with them a varied and diverse set of teaching and learning objectives.
Working with the Director RGASC, and reporting to the Senior Educational Developer for day-to-day operations, the Educational Developer,Indigenous Knowledges will work directly with faculty, librarians, other Educational Developers and staff to support intercultural dialogue and improve Indigenous cultural competency across programs and courses at UTM. They will help develop resources toenhance knowledge of Indigenous cultures, histories, traditional practices, spiritual ways, methodologies, and pedagogical approaches. They will provide guidance on the incorporation and alignment of Indigenous knowledges and pedagogical practices into program and course design and classroom instruction.
Working closely in partnership with the Indigenous Centre at UTM, the Educational Developer, Indigenous Knowledges also plays a pivotal role on behalf of the RGASC in Answering the Call: Wecheehetowin the University of Toronto Response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. This will include working with the UTM Indigenous Centre to engage in relationship building with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous and non-Indigenous faculty, scholars, staff, students, and external Indigenous communities and organizations.

Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing instructional design plans for use in teaching
- Advising instructors on strategies for developing and delivering curriculum that enhance knowledge of Indigenous histories/current experiences, Indigenous excellence and achievements, methodologies, as well as cultural and pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning.
- Analyzing needs and recommending approaches that would help enhance teaching/learning goals
- Planning and overseeing the implementation of an evaluation framework for assigned projects
- Conducting detailed analysis and evaluation to inform program planning activities
- Advising others on the development and evaluation of course and training materials
- Evaluating learning outcomes for program development
- Developing content for instructional workshops
Essential Qualifications:
Graduate degree, preferable, in Indigenous Education and/or Higher Education, grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing, methodologies and worldviews is essential.- Minimum five (5) years of experience in educational development, instructional/curriculum design and/or developing resources to promote Indigenous knowledge translation or decolonization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience working within Indigenous communities with strong knowledge of Indigenous worldviews, culture and values.
- The incumbent must be highly knowledgeable about the legacy and ongoing impacts of colonialism and have the ability to apply the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Final Report and Calls to Action within an educational context.
- Must be knowledgeable of cultural protocols to appropriately engage and foster respectful, reciprocal, ongoing relationships with local Elders, Knowledge Keepers, internal/external Indigenous communities.
- Demonstrated knowledge or engagement in scholarship related to theories and practices used in educational development and/or Indigenous scholarship, or Decolonization and its application to the curriculum development processes and tools, teaching and resource development.
- Demonstrated knowledge, skill, and experience with university-level instruction, program planning, facilitation, consultation, curriculum development, and faculty development.
- The incumbent must have a passion for supporting instructors of diverse backgrounds across the humanities, social science and science disciplines; sensitivity to the professional development challenges and support needs of educators at all career stages; strong personal initiative; tact and good judgment; an ability to successfully meet deadlines.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent facilitation and presentation skills; strong consultative decision-making skills; strong organizational skills; proven project management skills; and an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must have strong computer skills, including a high degree of functionality in the use of all Microsoft Office applications.
Assets (Nonessential):
- Membership of and engagement with a relevant professional body such as Education Development Centre (EDC), the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education (POD) or SEDA (Staff and Educational Development Association) is an asset.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 14 - $81,000 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $103,588. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
