MOCA Toronto is seeking a Public Programming Intern to work with the Museum’s programming team and assist with all facets of the museum’s learning and public programmes initiatives. The intern will have the opportunity to support the development and implementation of programming in 2023 and research and planning for 2024 and beyond. This position will receive direct mentorship from MOCA’s Head of Public Programmes & Learning and will play an integral role in the ongoing facilitation of public and learning programmes as well as research towards future projects. This role will allow the intern to gain valuable work experience in a museum while making an important contribution to MOCA’s Public Programming and Learning team. The research, programme production, and outreach they conduct will shape future programmes at the museum.
The ideal candidate will be a graduate from a college or university program in museum studies, art history, education, or curatorial studies with a strong interest in contemporary art and the museum environment. They should have strong planning and organizational abilities as well as experience coordinating and executing artistic programs. They should also possess excellent interpersonal skills and feel comfortable speaking in public. Experience working in a museum, cultural institution, or in the non-profit arts sector is a strong asset.
Responsibilities
- Research for outreach and relationship building for Public Programmes and Learning initiatives, with a focus on community engagement and relationship-building with school and arts education groups
- Provide administrative support for Public Programmes and Learning projects, including marketing, development reporting and programme coordination
- Provide production support for Public Programmes and Learning projects, with a focus on learning and education initiatives for various age groups
- Support and conducting tours for school groups
- Provide support to the Public Programmes and Learning staff to facilitate onsite and virtual learning activities and programming
- Assist in the research, production and delivery of MOCA’s online educational resources
Skills and Qualifications
- College or University graduate from a program in Museum Studies, Art History, Education, Curatorial Studies, or other related field
- Proficiency in MS Office, database management and good keyboarding skills
- Demonstrated research and writing skills and academic literacy
- A strong interest in contemporary art, public programming and arts education; familiarity with the arts landscape in Toronto
- Strong Interest in working with young audiences, and developing programmes suited for all-ages
- Good verbal/written communication skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of staff and publics in a courteous and professional manner
- Service Excellence: Meets or exceeds service standards when interacting with customers in the community and in the organization
- Accountable & Results Oriented: Demonstrates ethical behaviour and accountability

- Successful applicants must be willing and able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening and to take First Aid training if not already certified
Young Canada Works Eligibility
- Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible)
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
- Willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment
- Will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program
- Are currently unemployed or underemployed
- Are a college or university graduate
- Are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program
