Job Description

Your Opportunity:

Are you a strong team player with a love of Molecular Technology? The Molecular Pathology team in the Calgary zone has an exciting opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Assistant I supporting the Molecular Pathology (formerly Molecular Hematology) laboratory at the Diagnostic and Scientific Centre. The Molecular Pathology department, which includes Molecular Pathology labs at two locations in the Calgary zone, provides complex molecular testing for a variety of inherited and acquired conditions as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL). As a Laboratory Assistant I, you will plan and organize your work responsibilities and processes to perform standard and specialized procedures including DNA and RNA extraction by semi-automated methods. You will be responsible for pre-analytical specimen receiving, distributing, processing, and storage. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, responding to inquiries; cleaning; monitoring and preventative maintenance of lab equipment and work areas; maintaining common supplies; updating inventories and data sheets; and participating in training, lab quality and safety requirements.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Previous technical experience with processing samples. Excellent typing and database entry abilities (both speed and accuracy). Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Adobe Acrobat. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment. Superior organizational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize work and deliver accurate work under stressful conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in Connect Care. Minimum of 1-year of current experience in a clinical Molecular lab would be an asset. Post-secondary education with Molecular Biology courses would be an asset.
