Job Description

Central Eglinton Community Centre is a non-profit, neighbourhood-based community centre in North Toronto (Mt. Pleasant and Eglinton area) providing a wide range of programs and services to the community, including The Pal-O-Mine Club after-school program for school-aged children.

PURPOSE: To provide after school programming for school-age children (5 afternoons/week/school year).

EDUCATION & TRAINING/QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduate plus some college/university training in child development, recreation, education; current CPR/first aid training; satisfactory Police Reference Check. Experience working with school-age children; enthusiasm and genuine enjoyment of children; excellent organizational and program planning skills; energetic team player; sensitivity to issues of cultural, linguistic, social and economic diversity; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; experience working with volunteers an asset.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Plan and implement a safe, healthy and welcoming after-school program for children aged 4 – 12 years. Develop and plan a structured, yet flexible and creative schedule of play (arts & crafts, gross motor activity, games), homework/quiet time, snack, and club activities (cooking, art projects, music). Travel to neighbourhood schools, on foot or by TTC, to pick up children and escort them safely to CECC. Act as a positive role model and create an environment that promotes positive cultural and social interactions. Structure program plans according to age-appropriateness and interests of participants. Ensure the safety of all participants; ensure that effective health and safety practices are maintained. Keep accurate daily attendance, and complete forms as necessary. Establish good rapport and open communication with parents/guardians. Ensure that equipment and supplies are available for the program and that the program area is clean and safe.
