Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) has partnered with IOOF Seniors Home to move select Alternate Level of Care (ALC) patients, who no longer require the level of acute care provided in a hospital setting, to the newly-opened IOOF Short Term Transitional Care Unit.
As the Recreation Therapist you enable patients to acquire and/ or maintain the skills, knowledge and behaviours that will allow them to enjoy their leisure optimally and function independently with the least amount of assistance and participate as fully as possible in society. The Recreation Therapist provides programs and services that:
- improve and maintain patients’ skills and functional leisure abilities in the areas of physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning
- assist patients in utilizing previously acquired leisure skills or acquire new leisure skills appropriate to their limitations and future lifestyle
- promote an awareness of the importance of a successful leisure lifestyle
- promote knowledge and utilization of leisure resources within the home and community
- identify information and resources pertaining to physical and architectural barriers commonly found in the environment
- actively involve patients in the community in order to promote independence when returning to the home environment
As a qualified candidate you will have the following job requirements:
- Four year undergraduate degree
- Post graduate certificate in Therapeutic Recreation
- One to three years’ experience
- Working with people with disabilities
- Working with seniors
- Working with and leading groups
- Planning special events
- Working in a team setting
- Working in a health care setting (charting, medical terminology, implications of disease, etc.)
