KEY FUNCTION:
Assist in the provision of safe, effective therapy services and in ongoing operation and maintenance of therapy service areas.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Coordinator, System Transformation and Alternate Health Care Facility.
DUTIES:
- Assist with individual and group treatment programs.
- Prepare clients for treatment and assist with ambulation and transfers.
- Supervise patient treatments and provide instruction/assistance to patients.
- Document patient intervention as per departmental requirements.
- Prepare equipment for specific and general patient use.
- Maintain working knowledge of the use and availability of relevant equipment.
- Assist with patient referrals and patient scheduling in accordance with departmental practices.
- Ensure equipment and facilities are maintained (i.e. identify potential hazards/equipment breakdowns, complete maintenance requisitions, notify relevant stakeholders).
- Follow service instructions and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) practices.
- Ensure cleanliness of equipment, environment, supply and storage areas.
- Maintain inventory of equipment and treatment supplies.
- Maintain service recipient/non-service recipient statistics in accordance with Management Information Systems (MIS) guidelines and current Hospital practice.
- Assist with orientation and teaching of new Physiotherapist Assistant (PTA) staff and students.
- Perform administrative duties as assigned.
- Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis; formulate solutions for improvement.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a two (2) year Physiotherapy Assistant (PTA) Diploma or Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA) Diploma from an accredited college.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of six (6) months’ experience working as a PTA.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated judgement, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of available mobility equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to instruct and guide patients through recommended treatment programs/use modalities.
- Demonstrated ability to safely handle and maintain equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to safely manage patients with medical equipment (e.g. invasive lines, oxygen tubing, telemetry/cardiac monitor, and chest tubes).
- Demonstrated ability to assess patient’s ability to endure the Physiotherapy treatment (e.g. heart rate and pulse oximetry).
- Demonstrated knowledge of patient monitoring alarms.
- Demonstrated knowledge of incentive spirometry teaching.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
PERSONAL SUITABILITY:
- Successful Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) is required.
- Demonstrated initiative with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Demonstrated professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
