Job Description
The Physiotherapist is an integral member of the Workers Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) Upper Extremity Specialty Clinic interprofessional team. Through the provision of patient care and non-patient care responsibilities in the outpatient setting, the Physiotherapist enhances the Worker’s quality of life and timely return to work by assessing, developing and implementing plans of care in order to alleviate pain and other symptoms, maintain, improve and restore physical functioning and cardio-respiratory health and prevent functional decline due to injury, disease, hospitalization, medical or surgical intervention.
Within this role the Physiotherapist is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the KHSC strategy and the WSIB Service Level Agreement. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:Patient care responsibilities:
Utilize evidence-based practice, best practice guidelines and outcome measures to guide clinical decision-making and establish treatment goals in collaboration with the Worker and family through:
Assessment
- Conduct a thorough assessment (and reassessment) including objective testing and validated outcome measures to assess the Worker’s functional abilities, develop a profession-specific diagnosis and prognosis including estimated return to work (RTW) timelines and capacities and to form treatment goals and a treatment plan to achieve the goals
- Identify any emerging psychosocial concerns (e.g. pain-focused behavior, unusual level of pain) including discussion with the Worker regarding these symptoms and appropriate behavioral strategies and required consultations;
Medication Review
- Review the Worker’s current medications, including documentation of medication efficacy pertinent to the care and recovery of the injury and/or make recommendations for alternate medication, as required;
- Screen for any medication and/or substance issues, including Pharmacist review, as required;
Treatment PlansAdminister the following treatment plans to the Worker:
Functional Treatment – This service is interdisciplinary and focused on functional recovery and return to work further to an assessment(s) as requested and approved by WSIB. The treatment consist of 8 sessions delivered in a six (6) week block by an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals delivering evidence based, outcome focused treatment
Enhanced Functional Treatment – This service is interdisciplinary and for Workers where significant psychosocial issues have been identified and/or there is a need for specific work simulation or work conditioning to achieve successful recovery and return to work as requested and approved by WSIB. Enhanced Functional Treatment will be consist of 8 sessions delivered in six (6) week blocks.
Allied Health Session are utilized in situations where the Worker does not require Functional Treatment but does require a limited number (e.g. two or three) individual session(s) with a specific allied health professional (e.g. Chiropractor, Occupational Therapist, Pharmacist, Speech Language Pathologist)
Specialty Consultation Assessments and Diagnostic Services
Identify the need and arrange for Specialty Consultation Assessment through Admin Support
Education
Discuss with and educate the Worker on the day of the assessment, regarding:- Assessment findings;
- Proposed recovery recommendations, education regarding injury recovery;
- Promotion of functional recovery;
- Any emerging psychosocial concerns (e.g. pain-focused behavior, unusual level of pain) including discussion with the Worker regarding these symptoms and appropriate behavioral strategies;
- Proposed return to work planning;
- Worker’s concerns/questions;
Return to Work Planning
- Review WSIB’s Return to Work Plan and refinement of the plan taking into consideration the Worker’s functional abilities, accommodations and restrictions;
Articulate rehabilitative Return to Work recommendations based on Worker’s current functional abilities, accommodations and restrictions in cases where a return to work plan is not available- Consult and engage with the WSIB Return to Work Specialist and/or other WSIB staff, to facilitate early and safe return to work;
Reporting
- Complete a Comprehensive Assessment Report within the Service Level timeframes in Schedule D;
- Complete a Worker Summary Report to be provided to the Worker and submitted immediately following the assessment to the WSIB within the Service Level timeframes in Schedule D
Collaborative Return to Work Planning with WSIB Return to Work Specialist and Worker–
- Collaborate actively with the Worker and WSIB Return to Work Specialist to adjust, coordinate, implement and progress the Worker’s return to work plan.
Indirect care responsibilities:- Coordinate services with community agencies as it relates to the physiotherapy plan of care
- Act in the Clinic Intake Coordinator role in their absence
- Provide direction and supervision to health science students participating in the plan of care
- Complete documentation according to College and organizational standards
- Enter workload data accurately and at the required frequency
- Participate in orientation of new staff
- Participate in program and discipline-specific team meetings and educational opportunities
- Share newly acquired knowledge and skills with physiotherapy colleagues and the interprofessional team
- Participate in discipline-specific, program and organizational committees or councils as requested
- Participate in continuous quality improvement and Accreditation activities
- Complete all mandatory KHSC Learning Management System education modules
- Participate in approved research
- Perform other duties that may be requested
QUALIFICATIONS:- Graduate of a recognized school of Physiotherapy.
- New graduate must be eligible for membership with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
- Active, unrestricted license to practice with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
- Experience with report writing and service level agreements with the Workplace Safety Insurance Board Specialty Clinic
- 1-2 years’ experience in an busy adult ambulatory care setting is preferred
- 1-2 years’ experience with the functional treatment plans for WSIB Specialty Clinics preferred
- 1 years’ experience in the completion of specific WSIB reporting templates within Service Level Agreement timelines preferred
- Strong knowledge of musculoskeletal systems especially the upper extremity, including assessment, special tests, outcome measures and treatments
- Demonstrated ability to make sound professional decisions in a medically-complex, interprofessional and learning environment
- Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully
- Demonstrated strong documentation and report-writing ability
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a high degree of initiation and motivation
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks to be effective and efficient and to complete tasks within deadlines
- Demonstrated commitment to evidence-based and best practice
- Proven ability to attend work regularly
- Proficient with computer applications (i.e. Email, Internet, Excel, workload measurement tool)
- Proven good attendance
- Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
