Job Synopsis

This salaried full-time position is responsible for overseeing the receiving and workroom areas and all merchandise coming into the shop and being sold. This includes receiving, sorting, pricing, merchandising and sales and is accomplished through teamwork with the staff. The primary focus of the role is to ensure efficient production and a daily retail focus. Daily targets for production and financial goals are tracked to ensure the shop will hit key performance indicators.

This role is integrated into all aspects of the shop and, while it is a leadership position, it is also a position of direct involvement. There are many times the role is instructional and many times it is a hands-on side-by-side working position

The Production Manager directly supervises staff and along with the General Manager form the Management Team in the operation of the shop to ensure teamwork and a desirable working and shopping environment. The Production Manager will also be responsible for the staff and daily operations in the absence of the General Manager

The Thrift on Mill Thrift Shop seeks to be a friendly, caring presence in the community, showing value and respect to all. Practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God's creation and raising funds for MCC are also key components to the mission statement of this and other MCCO Thrift Shops.

MCC is a charitable organization that partners with churches and community organizations worldwide to walk with people who are disadvantaged. MCC supports activities that provide emergency assistance, reduce poverty, and promote healthy communities, sustainable living and alternatives to violence. As an internationally recognized NGO, MCC currently serves in more than 45 countries with over 475 partners, 1,000 staff and 40,000 volunteers.

Challenges


Key Responsibilities

General
  • Serve as a brand advocate and ambassador for MCC mission and values in every interaction with customers and donors

  • Share the news about your shop and the network in the community

  • Support Coordinators as needed to meet the demands of daily operations

  • Assist with special events and projects as needed

  • Ensure daily operations adhere to MCCO Thrift Network guidelines and are inline with strategic goals

  • Assist General Manager in developing shop budget

  • Monitor and evaluate success overtime according to shop indicators identified. Ensure appropriate data management. Develop and/or maintain reports that track indicators

  • Ensure daily operations of the shop including opening and closing; supervise cash needs for float, banking and deposits; ensure customer experience is in line with MCCO Best Practices

  • Responsible for managing the sales growth of the shop in consultation with the General Manager



  • Production
  • Oversee all processing of donations from receiving to retail floor

  • Ensure production quotas from each department are being met for the shop(s)

  • Evaluate sales statics, production reports and monitor sales targets

  • Assist Coordinators in developing strategies to meet their revenue targets

  • Oversee management of seasonal items including garden, sports, Christmas and other seasonal merchandise in storage areas

  • Assess workroom layout and efficiency and change as needed

  • Responsible for monitoring / tracking inventory of workroom supplies (Tags, stickers, receipt paper, plastic tags, garbage bags, gloves etc.)

  • Oversee and organize sell-on items

  • Oversee and operate Point of Sale terminals, troubleshooting or documenting issues when necessary, for tagging terminals and cash terminals

  • As a cashier, handle cash, gift cards and card payments with complete accuracy and assist with daily reconciliations as needed

  • Host after hours groups and tours along with General Manager and/or Volunteer Coordinator

  • Work collaboratively with Retail staff for planning and executing in-store sales, special events, and seasonal displays

  • Maintain supply of priced items to refresh retail space as needed

  • Oversee Silent Auction

  • Oversee Ecommerce

  • Keep well informed of legislation and regulations relating to safe donations (e.g. Health Canada, municipal and provincial laws relating to waste management and recycling, chemical handling, electronic waste program, etc.) and implement safe systems for handling

  • Provide supervision, coaching, evaluation, support, and training to staff you supervise

  • Work with Coordinators to determine what items should / should not be received, keeping control of incoming donations and assessing production volumes as needed

  • Work closely with workroom staff on efficient use of workroom space

  • Provide active, hands-on supervision and support to volunteers while creating a calm and fun atmosphere

  • Ensure accurate tracking and documentation of sell-on goods is maintained and matched to sell-on Accounts Receivable

  • Be proactive in promoting positive public, staff and volunteer relations

  • Responsible for the safe, daily operation of the shop, including in-store special events and sales

  • Responsible for staff and daily operations in General Manager’s absence

  • Assist with light cleaning to ensure immaculately clean retail environment (e.g. sweeping, dusting displays, recycling & garbage collection, etc.)


  • Management Team Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the safe, daily operation of the Shop, including in-store special events and sales

  • Provide back-up support for the General Manager, Coordinators and Associates in their absence or as needed, including opening and closing of the Thrift Shop

  • Be proactive in promoting positive public, staff and client relations

  • Ability to handle customer, donor and volunteer questions, concerns and conflicts in a professional manner

  • Provide back-up support for other managers in their absence or as needed, including opening and closing of shop (cash registers, daily reconciliations, etc.)

  • Assist with Social Media posts (Instagram & Facebook) and Ecommerce upkeep


  • Health & Safety
  • Adhere to Health & Safety Guidelines as established by law and the organization

  • Ensure the support and direction necessary for the effective implementation of MCCO’s health and safety program are provided and, health and safety policies, procedures and regulations are enforced

  • Be proactive in maintaining clean workspaces that meet health & safety standards, in the workroom and on the retail floor

  • Keep well informed of legislation and regulations relating to safe donations (e.g. Health Canada, municipal and provincial laws relating to waste management and recycling, chemical handling, electronic waste program, etc.) and implement safe systems for handling

  • Ensure staff on your team comply with the risk management policy and procedures and foster a culture where risks are identified and mitigated



  • Other
  • May be needed to drive the shop truck for pick-ups / drop-offs or other tasks

  • Ensure employees adhere to company policies and legal regulations

  • Assist with kitchen responsibilities / Maintain and coordinate the volunteer break room

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

  • Participate in MCCO orientations, provincial meetings, Peace Conference and Staff Development Day

  • Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others

  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized

  • Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and general public; communicate MCC's values, articulating the importance of MCC's criteria for workers, all of whom serve as representatives of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches which support MCC

  • Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public
