Located at the urban core of the beautiful North Shore with convenient access to major regional and global centres, Lonsdale Energy Corporation (LEC) continues to expand and develop a District Energy System that currently services over 100 buildings. Through the City of North Vancouver, the LEC has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Project Engineer, Building Connectivity and Performance.
Under the general direction of the Deputy Director LEC, your primary responsibility will be to review in detail and approve in-building hydronic system designs, inspect their installation, monitor and report on their performance and propose improvements. The position is also responsible to plan and coordinate the construction of energy transfer stations and the distribution system to ensure that service is available to meet customers’ requirements. This will include: review of in-building system’s compatibility, capacity requirement and drawings; monitoring performance; advising customers of potential improvements; interacting with all stakeholders including the City of North Vancouver engineering and building permit departments, developers and consultants; and in collaboration with LEC’s other Project Engineers, coordinating distribution system design, construction, operation and maintenance to minimize service interruptions. You will also be responsible for mechanical inspections and field reviews on site, quality control, asset management, system commissioning and performance testing. You may be involved in tracking and resolving system alarms or operational issues outside normal business hours.
Thermal stress analysis is a key part of this role and prior experience and training in this work would be considered advantageous for an applicant. You will be responsible for conducting thermal stress analysis calculations and design of both buried and in-building distribution piping systems in accordance with ASME B31.1. Ideally you are familiar with pre-insulated buried district energy piping and associated stress and expansion compensation methods. Good working knowledge of PASS/START-PROF, CAEPIPE or other similar pipe stress software would also be an asset.
You possess a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) and are registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or eligible for registration as a P.Eng. with EGBC within 12 months of starting the position. You will also have considerable related experience and analytical skills which includes a thorough knowledge of the principles, design, construction, and operation of in-building hydronic heating/cooling systems and controls. A certificate in project management, and experience related to municipal or utility construction projects will help you in delivering superior project results. Your attentive, professional, and personable attitude will support your interaction with existing and future energy customers, and your pragmatic hands-on approach will help you to efficiently resolve issues related to LEC services. Your expertise includes providing after-hours emergency response while in your “on-call” rotation.
Demonstrated success in leadership positions is essential, as are outstanding organizational, planning, budgeting and strategic analysis skills. Superior communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic, knowledge of WorkSafe BC requirements, and a demonstrated ability to deal diplomatically and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders will ensure your success in this position. Good working knowledge of MS Office, CAD software and in-building control systems is required. Familiarity with TERMIS or similar district energy simulation software would be an asset.
Through the City of North Vancouver, LEC offers an attractive remuneration and benefits package for this exempt position, including a compressed work schedule.
