Job Description
Valard is Canada’s premier utility contractor, as well as head of the Valard Group of Companies AND part of the Quanta Group, the largest electrical power contractor in North America. Valard has full-service capabilities for transmission, distribution, substations, foundations, telecommunications, and renewable energy construction projects.
Reporting to project specific Sr. Project Manager or Project Director as appropriate, Project Manager will be responsible for supporting successful project development and execution for the duration of the project or assignment. The Project Manager is a leadership position intended for continued advancement into larger and more complex project management roles with demonstrated experience and performance.
To be successful as a Project Manager, candidates should be able to lead teams, direct tasks, and initiate/complete project management in an efficient and timely manner. The Project Manager may assign smaller sections of the overall project and oversee assistant Project Managers, as appropriate. The Project Manager must maintain a level of oversight of all project activities, manage budget and schedule, anticipate and identify potential project issues and risks, and coordinate prompt mitigation.
Requirements
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT AND START-UP:
- Establish resource requirements for projects
- Coordinate with customer to determine timing for site work to commence and ensure transmittal of client deliverables in accordance with project schedule
- Successfully manage the relationship with the client and all stakeholders
- Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget
- Preparation and drafting of proposal documents and work plans
- Coordination of internal work teams and client interface for the development of new project initiatives
- Track development activities, budgets, and other key deliverables to meet client expectations
- Manage ad-hoc initiatives which are aligned with successful project delivery and start up
- Development and maintenance of project management plans and project execution plans
- Development of work breakdown structure (WBS), project schedules, project budget, and project personnel resourcing requirements
- Manage Contract Administration documentation including deliverables, timelines, turnover, notification requirements, etc.
- Oversee project permitting, camps, access, on-boarding, Health Safety Environment (HSE), Quality, Document Control, and other requirements for site work to commence
- Establish and maintain relationships with third parties/vendors
- Establish reporting and communication protocols for the project
- Ensure supporting documents such as issued for construction (IFC) engineering drawings, safe work and/or operating procedures (SWPs or SOPs), inspection and test plans (ITPs), environmental protection plans (EPPs), access plans, etc. are available for construction personnel (e.g. foreman binders, construction work packages, etc.)
PROJECT EXECUTION:
- Work with Construction Manager and all other team members to ensure the successful execution of projects and provide direction and support to project team
- Quality assurance
- Manage ad-hoc initiatives which are aligned with successful project execution
- Monitor project progress, scope, schedules, costs, safety, and quality and provide forecasting
- Ensure the ongoing transmittal of documentation identified by the Contract Administration process (e.g. quality documents, NCRs, engineering documents, environmental reports, safety reports and documentation, etc.)
- Set up, attend, and facilitate Client meetings. Ensure meeting minutes are taken, stored, and distributed to appropriate stakeholders
- Prepare and/or lead the preparation of project documents and reports such as daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly etc. or as dictated by the project requirements
- Manage project change i.e. Gather supporting documentation, review, store, and prepare project change documents
- Approve invoices, transmittals, timesheets, travel requests, and reports within designated approval limits.
- Coordinate RFI responses or route RFIs to appropriate project personnel
- Communicate issues to construction managers, discipline leads and executives as required
- Liaise with construction supervisors, engineering, client representatives, subcontractors, other Valard Group of Companies, and other project stakeholders to facilitate the basic day-to-day operational needs of the project
- Monitor and track procurement activities as the project progresses (e.g. major and minor material tracking, ad-hoc material purchases, etc.)
- Support adoption and utilization of standard project systems as per the key project execution processes deployed by the Project Systems group (e.g. project processes, templates, procedures, etc.)
- Coordinate next steps after substantial completion including commissioning, energization, physical handover, and final turnover
- Identify concerns to senior management work with all appropriate team members to resolve issues.
- Manage changes to the project scope, project schedule, and project costs using appropriate verification techniques
- Perform risk management to minimize project risks
- Facilitation and coordination of site visits from various internal and external stakeholders
PROJECT CLOSE-OUT:
- Manage ad-hoc initiatives which are aligned with successful project close-out
- Oversee finalization of engineering and construction deliverables to completion as per project requirements i.e. ensure as-built process is followed (red-line to record drawing process)
- Prepare, identify, review, and store final documents for submittal to client
- Manage closure of final contract documents including invoices, insurances, project deliverables, NCRs, etc.
- Document lessons learned
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Science, or Business with 5 years of pertinent experience
- PMP (or working towards), EIT or P.Eng certification(s), or other similar professional designations are considered an asset
- Minimum of 5-10 years of directly related experience is preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Project management concepts and principles
- Utility construction techniques and principles
- Engineering techniques and principles
- General knowledge of construction safety principles
- Electrical network regulator and utility practices is considered an asset
- Electrical codes and standards, and industry best practices is considered an asset
- Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio
- Critical reading and writing skills including letter writing, detailed emails, meeting minutes, etc.
- Strong negotiation skills
- Read and interpret engineering drawings
- Microsoft Project and Primavera P6 Scheduling experience is considered an asset
- Previous experience with JD Edwards is considered an asset
- Influencing skills
