RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC
The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).
Position summary
Under the supervision of the principal investigator and working closely with the trainees, the research assistant will be responsible of planning and performing the animal experiments, as well as maintaining the lab, ordering the material, and processing the collected tissue.
General Duties
- Actively participates in the execution of laboratory projects,
- Performs animal (rat) surgeries and procedures (carotid ligation, hypoxia, hypothermia),
- Collects brain and retina tissue and processes it for histology, immunohistochemistry, western blot, cell cultures, etc,
- Performs brain sectioning on a cryostat,
- Performs western blot and cell cultures,
- Prepares lab reagents,
- Orders consumables,
- Maintains/monitors lab equipment,
- Responsible for administrative tasks of the laboratory (e.g., renewal of ethics protocols, controlled drug license and inventory, maintaining Health & Safety standards),
- Support of graduate students and trainees.

Education / Experience
Education: Master's Degree
Field of Study: neurosciences or a related field
Work Experience:
- Minimum 1 year of basic research experience,
- Strong expertise with animal handling (rodents) and animal surgeries, cryo-sectioning, consumables ordering, lab maintenance,
- Strong experience with western blot and cell culture trouble shooting.

- Reliable and strong work ethics,
- Effective communication, excellent organization skills, and good time management skills,
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills,
- Knowledge and interest in neuroscience,
- Detail-oriented,
- Ability to work both independently and within a team,
- Ability to work under minimal supervision,
- Ability to oversee student’s work,
- Flexibility to work on weekends and beyond the 9 to 5 workday, as required by animal experimental schedule,
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel).
Additional information
Status: Temporary Part-Time (2-3 days per week)
Pay Scale: $26 to $48,29 per hour, commensurate with education & work experience
Work Shift: To be determined
