Job Description Summary
Under general supervision, performs minor procedures and assists Principle Investigators (PI s) and their staff. Participates in the organization, set-up and cleaning of holding rooms for small animals as well as procedure rooms and related areas. Duties include participation in the daily routine of animal care and cleaning duties, health monitoring, Animal Care Facility software maintenance, and assisting the Supervisor with administrative duties.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Animal Care Facility Supervisor. In the supervisor s absence will report to the Facilities Director. The Animal Care Facility Supervisor reports to the BCCHRI Facilities Director for administrative matters and to the Chair of the Animal Users Committee on animal issues.
Interacts with other research technicians, personnel and investigators. Must work in accordance with the ACF s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP s), and within the policies, procedures and guidelines established by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), the University of British Columbia (UBC) and BCCHRI.
Work Performed
Assists senior level staff with updating existing SOP s and policies, and the development of new ones for the facilities.
Provides training assistance to new facility users, new and lower level technicians in the use of equipment, techniques and procedures.
May perform complex technical tasks, such as, catheterizations, necropsies, blood sampling and injections, as well as less complex tasks such as ear notching.
May perform tissue for blood sampling for several research projects.
Coordinates, monitors and ensures the implementation and enforcement of laboratory safety rules and procedures.
Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Animal husbandry for mice and rats including but not limited to cage changing, health checks and weaning in CL1, CL2, and quarantine zones.
Autoclaving of cages and associated supplies for use in the facility.
Cleaning and associated tasks, of the holding rooms, common areas, and procedure rooms.
Daily checking of animals in facility for health, behavior, and housing conditions.
Maintenance of facility software system, including animal inventory protocols, reports, and tasks; assist users with facility software issues.
Assist senior staff with administrative tasks for running the facility and to help coordinate with UBC vets and continuing review.
Operate and maintain facility equipment.
Maintain supplies inventory and assist senior staff in purchasing supplies.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Under general supervision, must be able to perform a variety of routine and moderately complex tasks and be able to assess animal health and proper handling of animals. Failure to do so impacts on care to animals, animal numbers, scientific results and could cause increased costs to the Animal Care Facility and the PI.

Works under general supervision in carrying out familiar phases of duties and responsibilities; receives instructions during orientation and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures.

May initiate new employees into routines, procedures and operation of equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute.Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to effectively use MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint at an intermediate level.Demonstrated ability to be self directed.Ability to conduct needs analyses, plan, organize, manage, monitor, complete, and evaluate projects within allocated time and resources.Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities.Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to write clearly and follow SOPs and policies.Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve.Ability to think analytically and conceptually.Demonstrated ability to exercise a high level of tact, discretion and sensitivity.Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
