THE ROLE
Position: Security Guard (on completion of the HRP Security Clearance)
Competition Number: CNS 2023-06-20
Location: Halifax Regional Police Headquarters
Reports to: Site Supervisor
Rate of Pay: $Competitive - Please note, this is a unionized work environment.
Working Hours: Rotating shifts, various hours/days of the week.
Duties and Responsibilities:
While duties vary by assignment, the responsibilities of this role may include, but are not limited to:
- Protecting property, and sensitive information. Absolute discretion and confidentiality are required.
- Operating HRP phone systems. Fielding and transferring calls professionally, while interacting with both members of the public, and internal HRP employees.
- Comfort in learning/utilizing CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre), at the direction/request of HRP site work instructions.
- Responding to/working to provide Officers with requests for information.
- Providing exceptional face-to-face customer service in a public interfacing setting.
- Ensuring the health and safety of self and others in the workplace.
- Adhering to CNS’ Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality policies, systems, and practices (and those of the Clients we serve).
- Respecting CNS policies, Site Work Instructions, and Site Supervisor’s direction
- Other functions may include further reception/administration, reporting, the release of property, and access control.
WHO WE’RE SEEKING
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must:
- Complete an application for, and pass the HRP Security Clearance process;
- Be aged 19 or older;
- Be a Permanent Resident of Canada or a Canadian Citizen;
- Not have a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted;
- Be able to provide fingerprints and complete a criminal record check;
- Be eligible to apply for Government of Canada personnel security screening;
- Be able to communicate effectively in English (the ability to work in both official languages would be considered an asset).
Qualifications and Skills
The selected candidate will be a professional and detail-driven individual with a strong work ethic and a “Can Do” attitude.
Key qualifications and skills to be successful include, but are not limited to:
- Mental alertness with an ability to:
- react calmly, quickly, and appropriately in any situation
- concentrate and remain alert for up to 12 hours
- communicate observed characteristics/behaviour (good memory)
- demonstrate problem-solving and sound judgement
- Physical fitness with an ability to:
- climb multiple flights of stairs with ease
- remain seated for long periods
- remain standing for long periods
- Superior attention to detail with excellent verbal communication skills
- Excellent customer service skills
- Computer literacy is required, while an aptitude for continued learning is an asset
- Achievement of First Aid certification
- Successful completion of the Commissionaires Security Officer Course (online and in-class)
Although not required to apply, the following attributes are considered assets:
- Use of Force Certified
- Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces or RCMP
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention trained
- Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset
