Job Description
The Family Support Team offers supportive, strength-based resources to parents by building upon their current parenting values and skills.
We are looking to welcome an additional Parent Support Worker (FT or PT) to provide our attachment-based and trauma-informed parenting programs. This role also includes case management and providing system navigation in helping families to self-advocate and change their circumstances successfully.
1. Provide parenting support and foster sustainable relationships that connect families within their communities
- Provide resources and support to strengthen family dynamics with a caseload of up to 15 clients
- Work in collaboration with other professionals and community agencies to provide comprehensive services to families
- Support clients virtually, on site, and in their homes to increase effective communication, self-advocacy skills, parenting confidence, emotional wellness and evidence-based parenting strategies
- Establish rapport, create a sense of safety and develop trusting relationships with clients
2. Co-facilitate Weekly Positive Parenting Groups (evening work may be required depending on group timing)
- Encourage group participation and engagement
- Create an inclusive environment where all participants feel valued and heard
- Keep the group on topic and on time
- Facilitate weekly 1:1 discussion with group participants to provide additional insight and resources
3. Remain current on best practices and resources
Job Requirements:
- A background in social services, with a focus on children and families
- 1-2 years direct experience in the provision of community services and resources
- CRC and Vulnerable Sector Search
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite and document management
- Driver's License, travel required within the HRM at times
Additional Skills:
- Excellent communication skills, nonverbal, written and oral.
- Client Centered approach - Allows the client to lead the service and be the experts of their own lives. The worker acts as a facilitator to encourage and support the clients’ identified goals.
- Trauma Informed approach- Incorporating safety, trust, collaboration, choice and empowerment when supporting families.
- Understanding the risk factors and impacts of trauma and adverse childhood experiences.
- Attachment based approach- Working to support and strengthen family dynamics by identifying, reflecting on and validating children’s emotional needs.
- Critical thinking and problem solving - Allows the worker to objectively examine and gain perspective about the client’s situation to effectively respond and support them in reaching their goals.
- Highest ethics and integrity - ensuring that everyday practice adheres to professional values and standards set out by the agency.
