What we do and why we do it:
The Alex Youth Health Centre provides comprehensive health services with a multidisciplinary team through a welcoming, accessible, confidential, non-judgmental and youth-friendly environment. The goals of the Youth Health Centre are to provide integrated health, counselling, and social services to reduce barriers for youth aged 12 to 24 and to improve clients’ outcomes.
As the Youth Health Centre Mental Health Intake Worker, you will be responsible for completing intakes for clients interested in accessing the 12-session model and offering referrals to external resources. Reporting to the Clinic Manager, you will collect information on a client’s concern with Mental Health specific, goals with therapy, as well as a mental and social history. Intakes are an integral part of the client experience and helps guide if the Youth Health Centre services are a good fit with the client’s goals, as well as provide education on what The Alex can offer them. This role will be part of an interdisciplinary team, where you will work closely with both medical and social YHC staff.
What you will do:
Collect and gather information for the mental health intake in a trauma informed and culturally sensitive manner.- Refer clients to external agencies when necessary and appropriate
- Support in booking first appointment with the Youth Health Centre Mental Health Clinician and/or Medical team.
- Work closely with clinic scheduler to ensure clients are contacted in a timely manner and booked in for appointments in an equitable way.
- Gather and collect data for research and evaluation
What you will bring:
- An undergrad in the social sciences field (Social Work or Psychology) or health field (Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse with extensive mental health experience) and registered with the appropriate college
- Experience working with high risk, vulnerable youth
- Confidence in assessing risk of suicidality and ability to safety plan accordingly
- Experience working with an interdisciplinary team
- Knowledge of WOLF or CHR EMR is an asset
- Experience working from a trauma informed and culturally sensitive lens
- Awareness of community resources and how to refer to them
- A calm and non-judgmental communication style
- First Aid (either Standard/Intermediate or Emergency/Basic) - Level C CPR within 30 days of hire date certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire
- Satisfactory vulnerable sector police clearance and child welfare intervention check
- Knowledge of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRC) 94 Calls to Action an asset
Working Environment:
- Main Building (2840 2nd Ave SE)
- FTE (22.5 hours/week)
- Standard hours 10:00am – 6:00pm Monday-Wednesday
- Continuous extended periods of sitting, standing, and walking (sometimes up/down stairwells)
- Occasional physical action, and requires the ability to bend/crouch, reach above shoulder height, kneel/crawl, and carry objects (up to 20 lbs.) throughout shift.
