Job Description
Major Functions and Responsibilities
- Gross Examination and Sampling of Surgical Specimens:
- Prepare and perform gross surgical specimen dissection according to standard operating procedures
- Confirm pertinent and appropriate clinical information.
- Responsible for tumor banking and ancillary testing and/or other procedures under general direction of staff Pathologists. Organize and maintain specimens as per retention guidelines.
- Operate, maintain and perform basic troubleshooting of all instruments, equipment and procedures including the imaging and mapping of tissue specimens.
- Respond appropriately to non-conforming events and unusual situations and identify when to refer more complex issues or problems to their immediate Supervisor.
- Perform all quality control and quality assurance practices and maintain records as required.
- Participate in the training and orientation of new staff and students
- Prepare reagent and perform adequate tissue decalcification.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of instrumentation, applications, methodology and theory.
- Perform other related duties as required
< br / > < br / > Required Skills < br / >- Basic LIS and Microsoft computer skills.
- Basic understanding of CPSA Accreditation requirements
< br / > < br / > Required Experience < br / >- Related experience in Anatomic Pathology within the last 3 years.
- Competence in grossing surgical specimens up to Level VI
Minimum Qualifications
- Active or eligible for Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistants (CCCPA) Certification is a requirement
- ASCP-PA Certification
- Completion of an accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program.
- Intermediate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology and medical terminology.
