Peer Support Worker

Campbell Family Research Institute

Position Description
The Campbell Family Research Institute is currently seeking a casual Peer Support Worker to be part of the Addictions Division at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). The candidate will utilize their lived experience of mental health and/or substance use challenges as their facilitate participants progress through these interventions and working towards their unique goals and objectives. The candidate will work as a coach and liaison rather than a therapist or treatment provider, collaborating with participants as they progress as well as linking participants with additional resources as needed and in consultation with the research team. The Peer Support Worker will provide a source of encouragement and hope, partnering with participants as they move towards their visions. The candidate will connect with participants on an individual basis.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator and working closely with the research team, the Peer Support Worker may also support other research related tasks, including community outreach, participant recruitment, and knowledge dissemination such as oral and written presentations of study progress and findings. Other duties may include administrative tasks related to engagement, and potentially providing consultation and recommendations on proposals, reports and manuscripts.

The candidate will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. This position is located at 1025 Queen Street West, Toronto, Ontario. Some evening or weekend hours may be required; hybrid work arrangements are possible.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have completed high school and/or special courses combined with experience supporting those with mental health and/or substance use challenges. Participation in training on Peer Support/Recovery is an asset. The Peer Support Worker will be an adult with lived experience with substance use challenges and/or as a recipient of mental health and/or addictions services. Experience belonging to groups, agencies or organizations related to peer support, consumer survivor initiatives is an asset.

A strong understanding of the psychiatric consumer/survivor community and experience working with clients or organizations of diverse backgrounds are required. Computer literacy and the willingness to learn new computer programs are required, as this role will require a digital intervention and some electronic documentation.

Professionalism, a positive attitude, and the ability to work effectively as a team member as well as independently are all requirements. Successful candidates will possess strong organizational and time management skills. You will demonstrate awareness of diversity issues and the personal impact of discrimination faced by people with mental health and addictions challenges. You possess knowledge in the areas of community resources, the recovery process, and the peer support role.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills enabling you work within a collaborative and diverse inter-professional team are required. Effective organizational and problem solving skills are required. The ability to be flexible, self-reflective, and supportive are key assets. Training and supervision will be provided for this position.

Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Please Note: This casual position is part of the OPSEU bargaining unit.

Salary Range: $25.44 - $29.30 per hour
