Job Description
We are recruiting for a contract, part time (15 hours per week) Youth Mentor to join Family and Community Services. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with others across the organization to support caregiver and youth wellness through engagement in activities in centre and community-based activities. The designated office for this position is London. This position is expected to begin in September 2023 and end in August 2024.
Services are provided in Middlesex, Elgin, Oxford, Huron, Perth, Grey and Bruce counties. A flexible work schedule is required, including some work on evenings and weekends.
Responsibilities:
- Work with TVCC teams to mentor and coach youth with disabilities to understand and identify ways to enhance their own wellness through everyday activities;
- Work with TVCC teams to develop and facilitate group events relating to topics of wellness for youth with disabilities and their families;
- Assist with the development of accessible wellness-related resources for youth with disabilities and their families;
- Assist youth in understanding and effectively using available resources;
- Support project-based work for services for youth at TVCC
- Elicit feedback and input from TVCC youth by regularly engaging with TVCC’s Youth Advisory Council Trailblazers and subcommittees;
- Assist with the developing of best practices and evidence informed services (e.g. literature review)
- Connect with youth in a variety of group settings (e.g., community, video conference, Centre, etc.);
- Assist with the creating and executing of social media posts
- Administrative tasks such as Planning Calendar, grant reports or as requested by the FACS manager
- Participate in the ongoing evaluation of the service.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 1 year post-secondary education in a related field;
- Personal lived experience with a disability (e.g., physical disability, communication disorder, developmental disability, autism spectrum disorder);
- Demonstrated skill in Solution Focused approach;
- Ability to provide youth peer support and mentoring in a group setting;
- Awareness of the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of youth with disabilities and their families;
- Knowledge of diversity and appreciation of families’ individual needs;
- Demonstrated initiative, creative problem solving skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision;
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to communicate effectively in groups and individually;
- Ability to collaborate with staff and peers and work as strong part of a multi-disciplinary team;
- Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office 365 package of software and experience with virtual and social networking platforms (Teams, Facebook, Instagram, etc.);
- Ability to travel within London, Ontario and surrounding area would be considered an asset;
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
