Job Description
Who We Are:
Morningstar, Inc. (MORN) is a NASDAQ-listed financial services company, founded in 1984 by Joe Mansueto, who recognized inequity in the availability and distribution of financial information and set out to change these practices. Morningstar companies provide access to the tools, products, and information to democratize and demystify investing. This simple, revolutionary idea became the foundation of our company and the core of our mission: empowering investor success. From this beginning, Morningstar has grown to include 12,500 employees in 30 countries across the world.
The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Chief People Officer (Global CPO), the Global Head of DEI will be a member of the People and Culture Leadership Team. While Morningstar’s commitment to DEI is long-standing, this is a new role where you will be provided the opportunity to set the global DEI strategy and implement its strategies across our global enterprise. You'll be responsible for engaging the business group leaders to operationalize the company wide DEI goals. You’ll be able to extend your influence beyond internal programming as a DEI thought leader through our well-established financial services platform while creating synergy in our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) work with who we are internally. As part of this, our research team sees you as a valued collaborator in establishing DEI and sustainability criteria in external assessments as well as your stewardship to align Morningstar to those standards. Your data- and research-driven approach provides the foundation for a fruitful partnership with our C-suite leaders and Board of Directors, who are the foundation of the accountability chain for Morningstar’s DEI initiatives.
This position is based in our Chicago, Toronto or London office. Matching our company policy of collaboration, this is a hybrid work position with expectations of at least three days in the office.
Your Expertise:
You are passionate about the importance and impact of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. You see this work as a strategic driver of business success and as core to the sustainability of individuals, organizations and communities at large. You have the experience to bring the long-term perspective and gravitas to work with executives, as well as the empathy to work with all global talent. You understand this work requires us all to be open, appreciative, courageous and respectful. You have a proven track record of building this function and guiding an organization through the maturity it takes to be successful in this field. You are a leader, a change maker, skilled at listening and collaborating, utilize an entrepreneurial spirit, and use data to impact decisions and drive continual improvements. You can work at both the strategic and operational levels and clearly connect traditional HR issues to real business impact. You have proven success in:
- Leading a matrixed, global team and delivering results that enable individual business units and corporate functions to drive success.
- Demonstrating thought leadership in the DEI space that can be leveraged internally and externally to support the company’s sustainability goals and strategies.
- Implementing recruitment, career development, talent mobility, succession planning and talent retention initiatives and incentive programs that expanded the diversity of the talent pipeline.
- Engaging in transparent, candid and sometimes difficult conversations with respect and empathy.
- Executing in a hybrid environment (3 days in the office), including global travel to major offices (30%).
- Bringing 15+ years in business and/or HR and/or leadership, including 5+ years' experience within a high growth environment.
- Previous experience as a DEI leader.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; master’s degree optional.
Your Role at Morningstar:
In this newly created senior management role, you will report to our Chief People Officer (Global CPO) and partner closely with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team to ensure alignment while creating and driving a fair, inclusive, and equitable employee experience at scale. You will further develop and mentor in-house DEI professionals as part of executing the DEI strategy over the longer term. This includes:
- Designing and implementing scalable DEI solutions that align to our culture, reflect our values and enable our desired employee experience.
- Addressing DEI-related challenges that extend beyond the boundaries of Morningstar, shaping the communities in which Morningstar and its clients operate, and contributing to our corporate sustainability research in support of a more diverse group of investors.
- Partnering with the People and Culture leadership team to embed inclusive practices and hiring into all talent related operations.
- Overseeing the community relations, corporate giving, and volunteer engagement leadership and function.
- Engage the ERGs at Morningstar to expand engagement.
- Partnering with business units to mitigate bias and embed inclusive practices into operations.
- Leading compelling, data-driven discussions with our executive and senior leadership teams, including talent acquisition and retention, career development, talent mobility and succession planning.
- Leveraging internal and external data to measure progress against goals, identify trends and inform future actions that support hiring, retention and career growth at Morningstar.
Our Employee Experience:
Our company principles are the foundation for what we deliver to our colleagues as well as our clients.
- Transparency explains the ‘why’ behind decision-making.
- Independence enables contributing your perspective to the conversation – you are set up for success because of your differences, not despite them.
- Long-term thinking supports the full arc of your career, from recruitment through retirement.
Sustainability and fairness are embedded in our investing analysis, in our operational decisions, in our people practices and in our community engagement. Individual flexibility and the ability to make choices that support work-life integration are central to our culture and operational practices. You will be supported by equitable systems, processes, decisions and actions.
Your health and quality of life are important, supported and protected. Our Total Rewards package includes competitive compensation with above-market bonus opportunities, an industry-leading employee stock ownership program and access to the same investment research and planning tools we offer our clients. Our sabbaticals, where employees receive up to six weeks to refresh and recharge every four years, are available across the globe.
Beyond the Job:
We’re proud of our focus on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) as well as the passion we display for the communities where we live and work. We build products and offer services that connect people to the investing information and tools they need. Across our offices worldwide, we’ve invested in fostering a community where your voice is heard, your ideas matter and your contributions are rewarded.
Morningstar’s hybrid work environment gives you the opportunity to work remotely and collaborate in-person each week. We’ve found that we’re at our best when we’re purposely together on a regular basis, at least three days each week. A range of other benefits are also available to enhance flexibility as needs change. No matter where you are, you’ll have tools and resources to engage meaningfully with your global colleagues.
