What’s this position about?
The Manager, Designated Office (MDO) is responsible for managing all aspects of the Teslin Designated Office (DO). In addition to supporting the staff of the Teslin DO, the MDO leads, directs and reviews environmental and socio-economic assessment of projects within the South Central Yukon Assessment District with a goal of identifying environmental and socio-economic impacts. This includes identifying project effects and mitigation measures for adverse effects, determining the significance of any residual effects, incorporating traditional knowledge of First Nations and local knowledge into assessments, and developing recommendations.
What will I be doing?
You will be contributing to the enthusiastic and lively work culture of YESAB and will be located in Teslin, Yukon. You will be managing the resources and administrative processes to support the activities of the Teslin DO and collaborate in the development and implementation of environmental and socio-economic assessment strategies, policies, guidelines, systems, standards and processes. This position also participates in YESAB’s managers meetings and associated strategic and operational planning.
The Manage of the Teslin DO is responsible for:
- Managing the operations of the office and providing support, guidance and supervision to 1 Assessment Officer and 1 Administrative Assistant
- Manages, leads and supports all projects assessed in the South Central Yukon Assessment District
- Ensuring communications and documents issued by the Teslin DO follow YESAB’s guidance and procedures, and that reasons for decisions are clearly articulated.
- Training, overseeing and supporting staff in completing assessments and related work.
- Maintaining relationships with external parties, including First Nations, community representatives, government representatives, proponents, and other assessment participants.
- Providing information to and engaging with project proponents, governments, First Nations, communities, stakeholder groups and the public on YESAB’s processes
- Liaising with other Designated Office Managers and senior managers to identify emerging issues and potential approaches for addressing issues.
- Coordinate technical support
- Manage budget expenditures
What knowledge, skills and abilities do I need for this role?
Having a degree in Environmental Science, Social Science, or a similar degree, with general knowledge of Yukon Environment and Socio-economic Assessment Act, as well as Yukon First Nations and First Nations Agreements, is required. In addition, experience with supervision and management of teams is necessary.
Project Management experience, paired with strong time management and prioritization is necessary to be successful in the MDO role. Strong knowledge of environmental and socio-economic effects assessment methods, techniques and practices will contribute to the success of this position. Knowledge of the theories and principles of natural sciences (such as biology, geology, chemistry, hydrology, civil engineering), social and economic sciences, industrial processes, and other related disciplines to assess development projects would be a strong preference to excel and support the collective YESAB team.
