The Transportation Planning and Design section is looking for a talented Project Engineer in Training to be involved in the planning and design of diverse transportation infrastructure projects. In this challenging position, day to day work includes working on concept planning, preliminary engineering, and detailed design of Roads, Interchanges, Bridges, Bike Lanes, and a variety of other transportation projects.

- Work with the Project Management teams to facilitate the accurate and on time delivery of assigned Transportation Projects
- Work with in house engineering technologists and design consultants to prepare and recommend for design approval Conceptual, Preliminary, Tender and Issued for Construction engineering drawings
- Work with Project and Senior Engineers to complete design reports and memos.
- Support Project Managers and the design consultant throughout the design process, including participating in project meetings and providing oversight and support from the creation of concept plans through to Issue for Construction package and as-built plans
- Apply the City of Edmonton Complete Streets Design and Construction Standards, Transportation Association of Canada guidelines, and other industry best practices
- Complete field walks and data collection to determine feasibility, existing conditions, constraints, and potential issues of Transportation Projects
- Coordinate Transportation Projects with internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to utility coordination, railway, and pipeline requirements
- Apply technical expertise to anticipate, identify & resolve issues that may impact projects and provide oral and/or written feedback regarding engineering designs and details that cannot meet current standards/procedures/guidelines
- Support construction activities and provide design solutions to unforeseen site conditions
- Respond to project related inquiries from engineering consultants, internal and external stakeholders and City Council and provide support in responses to inquiries related to design practices, standards, guidelines and design exceptions
- Support Project Engineer, Senior Engineer, Supervisor and Director in initiatives, continuous improvement projects and other group led projects
- Sit on committees or working groups to represent the section
- Review and provide comments and feedback on circulations from other City sections
- Provide guidance to peers (other members in training), engineering technologists, and co-op students
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:- A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized University
- Must be registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with APEGA (in good standing) and working towards a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation
- Experience managing others or overseeing work by or produced by others is required
- Experience or knowledge in Transportation or Roadway engineering design is required
- Knowledgeable of geometric design of roadways and familiarity with design standards and guidelines such as the City of Edmonton Complete Streets Design and Construction Standards, and TAC (Transportation Association of Canada) guidelines and principles is considered an asset
- Knowledge of City Bylaws, Servicing Standards, procedures and specifications is considered an asset
- Additional training or knowledge of: traffic engineering; structural engineering; drainage engineering; and roadway structural construction techniques is considered an asset
- Ability to multitask, prioritize and produce results in a fast paced, changing environment
- Must be proficient with Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms) and/or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint)
- Experience with AutoCAD is an asset
- Highly developed problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making and planning skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, reporting writing skills, organizational skills, project delivery skills and dealing with the highly diverse audiences involved
- Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate, obtain and maintain cooperation and support from operating personnel as well as other stakeholders
- Skilled in dealing with public and sharing information to non-technical stakeholders
- Strong analytical skills with an ability to manage issues with a solution-oriented focus
- Ability to work and produce results independently and in a team environment in a professional manner
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) and/or method of transportation to get to project sites
