Job description:
Position Purpose summary:
Under the direction of the Shelter Supervisor the employee provides support services, on-site supervision, and security for the NWT Resource Centre.
Accountabilities:
Assists with completion of initial/ongoing assessment for each service user:
- Providing supervisor with service user admission information
- Observing, reporting, and recording service user behaviour
- Informing supervisor of any significant changes in service user’s condition
- Orienting the service user to the facility
- Completing concise, reliable documentation of service users presenting condition and other pertinent factors
- Completes daily standard documentation: assessment forms, service user records (progress notes), communication book, and other relevant service user reports.
- Enters HIFIS
- Service user Referrals – Hospital; RCMP
- Provides basic supportive care to service users:
- provides needed personal hygiene items.
- supports and reinforces case management decisions and direction.
- conducts general building security checks.
- provides appropriate crisis intervention.
- communicates a non-judgmental attitude towards service users.
- supports, coaches, and encourages service users
- provides food services
- participates in shift reporting,
- attends and participates in staff meetings
- provides concise and pertinent information about service user status.
- helps in daily planning and implementation of service user support care.
- treats team members respectfully
- works within the framework of the core values
- Performs housekeeping duties
- Aids other areas within the NWT Resource Centre as required
Working Conditions:
The work environment can be fast paced and demanding. The need to be constantly aware of the environment and the movements and attitudes of the individual service users can be stressful. There is a potential to work with aggressive, high risk service users in this position. There will be general housekeeping tasks required of the support worker (sweeping, mopping, dishwashing, laundry, etc.) This is an overnight job including weekends.
Qualifications and Education requirements:

Education, Qualifications, Experience and Certifications:
- Conflict Resolution
- First Aid
- Verbal Judo and/or NVCI
- Suicide Intervention
- WHMIS
- High School Graduate
- Post-Secondary Education or related experience in Social Services
- Clear Criminal Record Check

Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Ability to work within the mandate of and embrace the mission of The Salvation Army
· Effective interpersonal communication and interactive skills with individuals experiencing chronic mental health issues, effects of intoxication and other behavioural issues.
- The ability to respond appropriately, decisively, and effectively in crisis situations and in a stressful environment
- Effective communication in English both written and oral
- Effective assessment, observation and recording skills
- Implement policy and procedures
- Ability to work within a teamwork structure though will be required to work alone
- Effective interviewing skills
- Understanding of: Aboriginal and Inuit Cultures: Addictions: Mental Health and other social issues
- Computer skills are required
The successful incumbent will be required to complete/provide:
- Valid Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Valid First Aid certificate
- WHMIS
- The Salvation Army on-line certification for abuse prevention
- Clear internal abuse registry check
- Participate in mandatory yearly training
DAYS and HOURS of work:
Sunday to Thursday 23:00-07:00
