Purpose:
The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LA&PS) is the largest Faculty at York University with over 23,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and almost 100 programs delivered through 24 Departments, Schools, and Colleges, plus the IBM Markham Learning Site. Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications and Marketing, the Manager Communications and Marketing role works closely with Department Chairs / Directors / Undergraduate & Graduate Program Directors in LA&PS to identify departmental, or program needs and create mutually beneficial solutions. The Manager is responsible for the development, management, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of communication strategies including traditional and digital communication and marketing programs.The Manager oversees the activities of the Communications and Marketing teams that support academic unit communications. The role also works in partnership with the Manager, Marketing, Communications & Events to ensure that implementation procedures and monitoring and maintenance of effective communication and marketing processes are in place. The role produces and manages the writing, editing, creative design and production processes for communication and marketing materials to generate awareness and alignment with the University's and the Faculty's brand(s) standards and guidelines. The role supports the vision, mission, values and strategic direction of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies and York University, and contributes to a positive, supportive and student-focused team environment of high performance, respect, trust, collaboration and continuous improvement, and embraces diversity and fosters inclusion.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as Communications, Marketing, or Creative Technologies.
Experience:
5 years related and progressive experience in strategic communications and marketing, including experience in professional writing for traditional and digital channels.
Experience in art direction and/or design to capture and communicate messages through images.
3 years management experience, including some experience with budgetary reporting.
Skills:
Knowledge and familiarity with professional writing standards and CP Style.
Knowledge and understanding of strategic communications and integrated planning, marketing, issues management, public relations, and digital media.
Knowledge of editorial and journalistic principles.
Working knowledge of managing in a unionized environment and applying a collective agreement.
Knowledge and understanding of ethical standards, and policy documents relating to marketing, data collection, privacy, and accessibility.
Knowledge and strong familiarity with MS Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and design and publishing software (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator)
Knowledge and familiarity with Customer Relationship Management tools including campaign automation, for example: MS Dynamics, Mailchimp, SharePoint, ClickDimensions, SurveyMonkey, Mach Form, Microsoft Forms
Knowledge and familiarity with social media channels and tools, for example: SproutSocial, HootSuite, Meta Business.
Knowledge and familiarity with Content Management Systems, for example: WordPress, HTML/CSS, Drupal.Skills
Ability to communicate with sensitivity to cultural values and beliefs to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
Ability to produce a wide range of communication and marketing materials to reach targeted audiences including for online channels, social media platforms, and web-based communications.
Effective communication skills with a variety of diverse audiences.
Ability to create communications plans, strategies, and tactics.
Skilled in proofreading, editing, and maintaining attention to detail. Able to streamline and standardize communications written by a variety of authors.
Ability to exercise tact, judgement, confidentiality, discretion, and a high degree of political acuity.
Effective interpersonal, decision-making, and organizational skills with proven ability to influence diverse groups and nurture partner relationships.
Ability to process, synthesize and present information/ recommendations/ plans to a varied audience.
Effective initiative, analytical, research and presentation skills.
Proficient with MS Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), WordPress, design, and publishing software, (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, Canva).

York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
