Job purpose
The Naloxone Outreach worker uses a harm reduction philosophy to distribute naloxone kits, provide training and education, and support those at risk of overdose. This position focuses on injury prevention, health and wellness promotion, and harm reduction as it relates to substances.
Duties and responsibilities
The primary duties of this role:
- Use non-judgmental approach when engaging with clients and community,
- Identify high-risk individuals and communicate efforts with action plan,
- Engage with community members and partners regarding possible educational opportunities,
- Educate on overdose prevention and Naloxone with various demographics including rural and Indigenous communities,
- Provide reliable resources for community members when requested and/or appropriate,
- Provide evaluation surveys following education sessions to gather feedback on programming,
- Follow up with community partners routinely to offer training for new staff,
- Help with community engagements, planning, awareness events, and committee work when appropriate,
- Evaluate client needs and promote the use of appropriate safer sex and safer substance using supplies and strategies to decrease their risk of overdose, transmission of STBBI and other health implications (abscesses, etc.),
- Provide general referrals for clients and warm handoffs whenever possible,
- Provide basic wound care, when necessary,
- Provide confidential care and maintain records regarding client interventions, when appropriate.
- Maintain naloxone inventory,
- Document all necessary information for reporting requirements,
- Submit a monthly report by the 4th of the following month, as per our contract agreement,
- Research practices for continuous professional development relevant to position and organizational mission,
- Help maintain needle sweeps and needle calls by assisting when appropriate.,
- Prepare harm reduction supplies for distribution to clients and community partners, and
- Provide support for other Northreach staff, as necessary.
Qualifications
Qualifications and competencies include:
- Experience in teaching/facilitation of small and large groups,
- Experience working with vulnerable populations (those experiencing homelessness, substance use, mental health, engaged in sex work, 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, Indigenous peoples),
- Strong understanding and advocacy of safer sex and safer drug-using practices,
- Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, Syphilis, and other STBBI,

Working conditions
The position is Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm with a half hour for lunch. There may be the occasional off hours task that is scheduled in advance. Standing, sitting, walking, and driving are all expectations of the role. Employee must have access to a reliable, working vehicle as employee is expected to drive to community engagements/events/trainings/partners. The role may require use of medical equipment for STBBI testing, basic wound care, naloxone training, education, administration, etc. Nurse is expected to only practice within professional scope.
