Lang House Youth Counsellor
Part-Time Evening (20 hours)
Start Date: Immediate
Location: Orillia, ON
Salary: $22.00 (Wage level 6)
Pine River Institute is a live-in treatment center for youth 13 to 19 years of age struggling with substance abuse and addictive behaviours. Our program includes; a therapeutic wilderness program phase near Algonquin Park, followed by a live-in phase at our campus located on a 200-acre site 100 kms northwest of Toronto. Our program uses a progressive discharge approach that is complemented by an aftercare program.
The purpose of Lang House is to provide students moving from the highly structured campus setting into a transitional program that supports their maturity and enables them to successfully launch into young adulthood. Our family-centered program is innovative and highly structured, and creates opportunities for adolescents to engage in a focused transformation process through a fusion of education, therapy, recreation, and life skills. The majority of our students are from Ontario. We receive funding support from the Ministry of Health and academic support through the Ministry of Education.
The ideal candidates will possess strong leadership, relationship, communication and positive role modeling skills. This position reports to the Transition House Therapist with responsibilities that include but are not limited to; organizing, leading and participating in student’s daily academic, work, recreational and therapeutic activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and sustain appropriate interpersonal relationships with students, peers, supervisors, and community stakeholders to ensure open, constructive communication critical to the success of the program
- Supporting students in following expectations and rules of the transition house.
- Development of student action plans
- Support daily life skill routines, (cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, appointments etc.)
- Coordination and follow up on student’s academic, work, and recreational activities
- Connect with community partners to support students’ integration into the community
- Coordinate and participate in Transition House outings and activities
- Contribute as part of a multi-disciplinary therapeutic team to evaluate student progress and plan individual modifications as required.
- Participation in and facilitation of group meetings & discussions
- Participation in group therapy activities
- Help ensure the therapeutic goals of the transition house in general and the individual therapeutic plan for the students are realized.
- Ensure the safety, both physical and emotional, of the students
- Provide written reports as required in a timely and comprehensive manner.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Police Clearance with Vulnerable Sector Check
- Demonstrated sound judgment, integrity, patience, commitment and a sense of humour.
- CYW diploma or equivalent
- Some experience with and training in child and youth care practices.
- Experience working in outreach or community placement services
- Experience in addictions and mental health field considered an asset
- Knowledgeable about the community of Orillia preferred
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and professional.
- Demonstrated commitment to personal growth and development.
- Valid First Aid Certification & Level ‘C’ CPR.
- Valid driver’s license
