New Beta Innovation Canada Limited (NBI-CA) is a biopharmaceutical manufacturer of hemoglobin-based therapeutics. In Burnaby, BC, we have a state-of-the-art Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliant facility, with custom-designed equipment for commercial-scale production. Our production processes are undergoing validation for rigorous GMP requirements.
Our operations include a full in-house analytical laboratory, a water purification plant, a skilled engineering team, and experts in compliance and regulatory affairs. POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the HR Senior Manager, you will contribute to the success of the Health & Safety (H&S) function as well as provide support to the HR department. The H&S Senior Specialist will support activities designed to provide a safe and compliant facility through the creation, implementation and overview of the H&S Program. You will be part of a collaborative HR team who supports managers and employees by building trust and providing timely advice and support.
1. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and refine the NBI-CA H&S programs, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable requirements from agencies which include WorkSafeBC, WCA, OHSR, and Public Health Agency of Canada
- Influence and encourage the adoption of safe work practices and procedures and drive the company safety culture
- Work collaboratively with departments to identify/assess risks, promote compliance and responsible behaviors as required by company policies, relevant H&S standards, codes, regulations and best practices
- Stay current with development and changes regarding COVID-19. Implement safety measures, policies and procedures as necessary
- Ensure all required safety records are kept up to date. Follow up on all action items to address safety issues on a timely basis
- Develop, conduct, and/or source H&S related training which include H&S orientation, COVID-19 briefing, JHSC training, Respectful Workplace policy training, etc.
- Ensure training materials are up-to-date and relevant to the work environment. Manage all training documentation and records
- Lead incident investigations, recommend corrective actions, and submit all relevant WorkSafeBC reports in a timely manner
- Report any safety incidents or findings to management, as well as make recommendations on how to correct hazardous conditions
- Be the key contact for external parties regarding claims, audits, compliance requirements
- Coordinate and support the implementation of company emergency response plans
- Perform relevant data analysis to determine the effectiveness of current practices and make recommendations for continuous improvement
- Collect and analyze safety data including training, WorkSafeBC statistics, workplace incidents, etc.
- Lead and participate in H&S related meetings
- Perform other duties as required
2. Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- A diploma, certificate or degree in Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S), Industrial Hygiene or Industrial Sciences
- Minimum 3 years of OH&S experience
- Knowledge of the Worker’s Compensation Act, WorkSafeBC OH&S Regulations and Claims Management
- Experience developing and implementing H&S policies, procedures and practices
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build strong relationships with all levels across the organization
- Energetic, self-motivated and presents H&S in a positive and practical manner
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Knowledge of the Canadian Biosafety Standards is an asset
- Proficiency with MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
- Valid OFA Level 1. Possession of a valid OFA Level 2 is an asset
