Overview:Under the direction of the Manager Engineering Design and supervising professional engineers, to support capital projects, provide designs for SCADA, Automation and related Communications and Electrical systems for power generation, substations, system operations (Jackfish Control Centre), residual heating, renewable energy and other systems. Scope includes all communities, building, plants and facilities in NTPC’s Hydro Zone including the North and South Slave, the Thermal Zone and customer or IPP-owned facilities. Technologies include thermal, hydro and other renewable generation technologies. Complies with NAPEG, Engineering design standards and processes, and supports needs and complies with processes of Asset Management, Engineering, Project Management and other NTPC groups.Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with Dam Safety Engineer, Operations staff and using the Dam Safety Guidelines issued by the Canadian Dam Association, coordinates and subsequently manages the mandatory Dam Safety Review of NTPC’s hydroelectric facilities.
- Assists the Dam Safety Engineer and Hydro Operations Staff with the routine inspection of hydroelectric facilities such as dams, spillways, penstock, culverts, stop log and gate structures, etc.
- In collaboration with other engineering staff, recommends the hydroelectric engineering design work that needs to be contracted out to appropriate specialists or engineering consultants due to staff shortage or lack of in-house expertis
- Assists with providing technical support services for civil related works such as dam safety, dam inspections and water management. Prepares Requests-For-Proposals (RFPs) for Consultants to perform independent and comprehensive Dam Safety Reviews in accordance with industry practice such as the Canadian Dam Association Guidelines.
- Prepares technical specifications, tender documents, drawings and cost estimates for projects that are designed "in-house". Carries out design checks and reviews the work done by engineering consultants, specialists and "in-house" design staff.
- Assists in tender evaluations and provides recommendations for contract award. Carries out contract administration on construction contracts and equipment purchases and processes progress and final payment claims for review and approval.
- Prepares Requests-For-Proposals (RFPs), including the detailed scope of work, for services that are to be provided by engineering consultants and specialists.
- Performs on-site construction supervision, prepares detailed, project-specific Civil commissioning procedures and carries out or witnesses, as appropriate, the commissioning of Civil works.
- Assists in executing capital projects to the maximum satisfaction of the end-user (generally the Regions), allowing for constraints established by Corporate objectives, sound engineering practice and safety.
- Prepares regular technical and budgetary progress reports on ongoing projects and, upon project completion, prepares technical reviews and budget variance reports.
- Provides training to and receives training from co-workers and performs administrative duties in support of the Engineering Department as determined by the work group in consultation with the Director Engineering.
- Provides, on a regular basis to the Manager, written and verbal progress reports on Design Section issues as they relate to hydro. Prepares, submits and/or presents to Senior Management, written technical reports, project briefs, and other technical and Design Hydro Section related documentation.
- All other duties as required.
Qualifications:- Bachelor's or Master degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering and related experience in a utility or industrial setting with SCADA / Automation / Telecommunications / and Controls.
- Registered with NAPEG or eligible to be registered with NAPEG as a Member in Training in the NWT.
- Excellent English communication and writing skills.
- Ability to work alone, in a team environment, and independently with minimal supervision.
- Above average interpersonal skills and ability to work in a functional team environment.
- Strong consultation, organization, and time management skills to ensure work is appropriately prioritized.
- High-level and intimate knowledge of electrical, electronic, network, protection, PLC, SCADA and communication systems.
THE FOLLOWING SKILLS ARE DESIRABLE
- Proven experience with supervisory controls and communications equipment, remote terminal units (ABB RTU560) and power line carrier equipment (ABB ETL680)
- Proven experience in PLC logic and programming with the following PLCs: Allen Bradley, Modicon, GE Fanuc, Siemens, ; and HMI or SCADA programming and configuration of any of the following software packages Intellution, Survalent, Willowglen, etc.
- Proven experience in Panel design and layout, bill of materials, and wiring schematic capabilities is expected. The candidate must have experience reading and red-lining PI&D drawings.
- Accomplished computer skills with MS Office Suite, MS Project, etc. and ability to apply electrical design software (e.g. ETAP, Aspen, SKM Power Tools – Dapper and Captor). Proven proficiency in AutoCad is a requirement.
- Proven ability to critically review, analyse and interpret highly technical information, designs and consultant reports, including engineering accuracy, cost implications and operational feasibility.
Salary for this position ranges from $48.80/hr-$59.29/hr, plus a location allowance of $3,823 per annum.
