POSITION SUMMARY
The Counselor is responsible for providing counseling to families, youth, and children regarding addictions and family issues. Counseling will be provided in a culturally sensitive manner on a one-to-one basis, families, in groups, circles and couple’s counseling. The counselor must be able to work from a trauma informed perspective. The Counselor will provide services to Bands in which the Seabird Island Band provides Health Services to and will involve travel to the communities. The Counselor will educate the community through workshops to address issues identified. The Counselor will facilitate daytime and evening education workshops. The Counselor will make referrals for clients to residential treatment centers as required and help facilitate at the Recovery home.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
Primary Responsibilities
- Work in communities that the Seabird Island Band provides Mental Health services for
- Facilitate sessions at Recovery home
- Provide the supervisor with a monthly calendar of all planned activities and how time is being used.
- Provide the supervisor with a monthly calendar 2 months in advance for all planned activities such as workshops and community activities.
- Provide a pre-established work plan as requested by the supervisor.
- Counsel adults, youth, children, couples, and families.
- Facilitate healing circles.
- Provide crisis intervention for situations such as suicide attempts, liaise with community professionals and ensure follow-up occurs.
- Provide crisis intervention for High Risk Youth as identified by the community/Band.
- Work at connecting families and youth.
- Prevention work to lessen the involvement of Child Protection by Child & Family Service Agencies.
- Provide mediation as needed, e.g.: parent / teen conflict.
- Confront families on unhealthy or unsafe life styles and situations.
- Confront youth on their negative/unhealthy behavior; provide the youth with treatment information, complete intake and all forms associated with the youth entering treatment programs.
- Maintain appropriate case documentation concerning assessment, client goals, service actions, and case evaluation.
- Be accessible, accountable and responsive to community members
- Provide monthly and year end statistical reports to the supervisor.
- Monthly reports will be provided by the first week of each month.
- Assess the needs of individuals and families in the community and make recommendations to the supervisor for program planning and implementation.
- Facilitate weekly evening workshops for youth/parents/groups/families in the community.
- Liaise between and make referrals to other agencies or internal departments regarding individuals/families.
- Help families learn skills such as communication/anger management & life skills
- Attends monthly Mental Health Team meetings or other meetings requested by your supervisor.
- Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Supervisor/Manager, Director, or the CAO.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in social services or equivalent is required.
- 5 years’ experience in addictions and counseling field or a variety of education + 3 years' experience in the counseling field.
- Alcohol and Drug counseling experience an asset.
- Experience working in a First Nations community.
- Ability to counsel on a 1 to 1 level, couples, crisis intervention, mediation, group/family counseling and facilitate healing circles.
- Ability to assess the needs of individuals and families in the community and make recommendations to the supervisor and Band regarding program planning and implementation.
- Ability to keep appropriate current case documentation concerning assessment, client goals, service actions, and case evaluation.
- Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Internet, and Outlook).
- Excellent active listening, verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedures.
- Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
- Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
- Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check required.
