VOLUNTEER LANGUAGE INTERPRETER
Victim Services Toronto (VST) provides trauma-informed support and advocacy in the moment for any person in Toronto who has experienced crime or sudden tragedy. We also work to prevent violence through community engagement.

Position Title: Volunteer Language Interpreter
Language/ # of positions: 15 Spanish, 10 French

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Victim Services Toronto (“VST”) is seeking dedicated and skilled individuals to join our team as Volunteer Interpreters for Spanish and French languages. As a volunteer interpreter, you will play a crucial role in bridging communications gaps between victims of crime and sudden tragedy who have Spanish or French proficiency and our dedicated team of front line staff who are not proficient in the client’s spoken language. Your linguistic skills will help ensure that victims receive the service and support they need to navigate the aftermath of a traumatic incident and access resources in a supportive and culturally responsive manner.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate effective and accurate communication between clients and crisis counselors/case workers through consecutive interpretation in crisis and traumatic situations.
- Maintain a strict confidentiality and professionalism while and after interpreting sensitive and confidential information
- Facilitate communication between crisis counselors on scene who are not fluent in the language being used to ensure clear understanding between both parties
- Facilitate two-way interpretation via three-way telephone or in person to ensure clear understanding between both parties
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
- Be at least 19 years old
- Fluency in English and proficiency in an additional language (Spanish or French) is required
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex information accurately and sensitively
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to professional standards of ethics and boundaries
- Flexibility and availability to volunteer during weekdays, weekends and evenings
- Must feel comfortable providing interpretation services in a crisis situation to victims of crime and sudden tragedies
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Successful completion of a vulnerable sector check (upon selection only)
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination OR documented accommodations (upon selection only)
