Position: Youth Addictions Counsellor – Awake Overnight
Location: Ata Chiminis Mikisiw “Eagle Embracing You” Healing Lodge
Hours: 0.8, 64 hours bi-weekly
Schedule: 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon
Salary: $17.92 - $25.80 (salary is based on experience, skills and education)
JOB SUMMARY
The Neecheewam Youth Addictions Counsellor is responsible for implementing all aspects of the day-to-day functioning of programming at Eagle Embracing You Healing Lodge. This position is directly focused on relationship building, advocacy, crisis intervention, addictions support, and mental health and addictions education using a trauma informed harm reduction approach.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Responsible for day-to-day functioning of a nurturing, safe, therapeutic environment and ensuring that residents are supported mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
· Building trusting relationships with residents and staff in a supportive and non-judgmental way.
· Using daily life events to initiate learning opportunities and teach life skills (cooking, cleaning, chores, personal hygiene, etc.) to residents.
· Organize, plan and facilitate activities and learning opportunities.
· Transport residents to appropriate meetings, appointments, activities, and events.
· Intervene appropriately in times of emergency or crisis.
· Encourage and participate in traditional Indigenous practices, such as traditional ceremony and teachings related to Indigenous culture.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
· Child and Youth Care diploma/certificate and/or Addictions certificate is considered an asset.
· Minimum 2 years’ experience working with youth.
· Experience working in a crisis or addictions setting is an asset.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
· Good understanding and application of a trauma informed approach and the recovery process.
· Knowledge and experience working with sexually exploited youth.
· Knowledge of Indigenous customs, traditions, and beliefs an asset.
· Ability to speak an Indigenous language an asset.
· Must be willing to obtain necessary training as per agency training policy (CPR/First Aid, Trauma Informed training etc.)
· Valid drivers’ licence required.
· Criminal record, child abuse registry check and driver’s abstract required (subject to approval).
· Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
