JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director, Emergency Services, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will work as a RN in the Extended Class RN (EC). The NP will provide leadership and promote excellence patient /family centered nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. The NP is responsible to: Provide direct patient care, coordination of care, discharge planning and the coordination of related community and other resources for the emergency patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and practice settings; initiate, participate and / or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interprofessional teams. The NP will work in partnership with consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education.
RESPONSIBILITES:
- Based in the Emergency program, the NP will function with a high level of autonomy and expert skill in the management of ED patients.
- Utilizes a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for patients.
- Collects and interprets data about the health of the patient to determine a medical diagnosis and treat complex responses of individuals and families to actual or potential problems.
- Conducts in depth comprehensive assessments of patients that integrate a wide range of complex information.
- Initiates and evaluates selected medical and nursing therapies within the NP scope of practice, medical directives and practice guidelines.
- Collaborates with the physician when determining an acute or chronic diagnosis as appropriate.
- Consults with and refers to other health care professionals and community services as needed.
- Provides formal and informal education to internal and external teams/partners
- Participates in program evaluation and reporting requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current RN (EC) registration with the Ontario College of Nurses, with a Nurse Practitioner certificate in Acute Care or Primary Care;
- Masters of Nursing required;
- Member of the RNAO and the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario;
- Two (2) years recent clinical experience in Emergency Services preferred
- Successful completion of College of Nurses approved education to prescribe controlled substances required.
- ENC certification preferred or started within one year of start date of position
- Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner
- Ability to produce high quality work while meeting deadlines

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and the Ontario Nurses Association (RN Bargaining Unit Local 051).
Successful applicants must provide a satisfactory Criminal Investigation Reference for the vulnerable sector, dated within the past six (6) months.
