The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide direct, comprehensive clinical care to patients in the Emergency Department (ED). The NP works autonomously to diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures within the legislated scope of practice and where required, a defined collaborative practice agreement, to provide care to a defined population. The NP provides direct care and partners with other members of the health care team for the achievement of immediate care to patients. Working in collaboration with a physician, the NP assess the physical needs of highly acute complex patients admitted to the ED. The NP orders, interprets, and records results of clinical tests and reports results to physicians.
The NP integrates selected tasks and knowledge from the NSHA Emergency Program of Care into a framework of advanced nursing practice. The NP works in close collaboration with Emergency Department Physician, nursing and interdisciplinary team.
The NP adheres to the NSCN Standards for Nursing Practice and the Code of Ethics and is responsible and accountable at all times for their own practice consistent with relevant legislation, professional and ethical standards. The NP is accountable to identify, analyze and evaluate activities that are reflective of quality improvement initiatives.
The NP ensures that the principles and practices that guide Nova Scotia Health (NSH) such as the overall organizational and Emergency Program of Care’s vision, mission, values, expected behaviors, the leadership philosophy, organizational health, population health, ethics, safety, quality, partnerships and interdisciplinary collaboration are integrated within the support that is provided by the work that they do and through the messages they deliver.
We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
Masters of Nursing – Advanced Nursing Practice stream or equivalent nurse practitioner program- Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner – Family/ All Ages, and in good standing with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) or eligible
- Recent experience working in a Nurse Practitioner role with family of all ages preferred
- Valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License and access to reliable vehicle
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred, and ability to work with language agency to deliver care to patients in other languages is considered an asset

- Assignment duration from one (1) month to three (3) months
- Shifts may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
$53.08 - $62.05 hourly
$64.22 with 25 years' of NP experience
Incentives are available to successful applicants residing outside the Western Zone of Nova Scotia Health and willing to relocate. Candidates who are currently employed within the Western Zone must have capacity to accept temporary assignments that do not result in operational disruptions or result in the payment of overtime for regular shift assignments.
Successful candidates of the locum project will be eligible to receive a Completion Bonus of $1000 after completion of 162.5 hours worked. There is a one (1) month minimum with commitment determined upon hire. Successful candidates will also be eligible to receive reimbursement for mileage or airfare as appropriate, as well as for reasonable accommodation.
