Job Description
The Rockyview General Hospital Eye Clinic is a dynamic, high volume ambulatory clinic caring for over 33,000 patients per year. The Eye Clinic offers a variety of ophthalmic sub-specialties including retina, oncology, glaucoma, low vision, comprehensive, neuro-ophthalmology, adult strabismus, as well as an urgent eye clinic that operates 365 day per year. As an Ophthalmic Assistant, you must be a strong team member as you will work in a multidisciplinary team including other ophthalmic technical personnel, administrative staff, nurses, and ophthalmologists. You will be responsible for obtaining histories of present illness; documenting ocular, medical, and family history; recording medication history and drug allergies; testing visual acuity in adults and children; performing Humphrey visual tests, lensometry, auto-refraction, pupil assessment and eye pressure measurements by tonopen and applanation tonometry; applying topical eye drops to anesthetize, dilate or medicate the eyes; performing Amsler grid, Schirmer tests, PAM, color vision tests; assist in preparation of patients for laser and minor office procedures; and maintaining and stocking basic instruments and supplies, respectively. The Ophthalmic Assistant works closely with retina ophthalmologists and provides assistance with injections, lasers, and other retinal treatments and assists RNs/physicians with admissions for surgery. The Ophthalmic Assistant may perform other basic tests and measurements as requested by the Ophthalmologist and educate and instruct patients concerning eye care. The successful incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of ophthalmic diseases, be alert to any signs of potential risk to the patient and be able to take the necessary steps to ensure the patient’s safety. This is 6 month temporary position and could end on or before end date.
As a Ophthalmic Assistant (OA), you will perform assigned duties in an assistant capacity to the Ophthalmologist and also perform diagnostic testing under the supervision of an Ophthalmic Technician or Technologist.

Required Qualifications:Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:IJCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or equivalent. Minimum of one year experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant in a busy clinical environment. Knowledge of glaucoma, retina, neuro-ophthalmology, comprehensive clinics. Knowledge of ophthalmic lasers. Knowledge of medical device reprocessing. Good understanding of medical terminology. Good understanding of ocular pharmacology. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to function as a team player. Ability to prioritize multiple activities.
Preferred Qualifications:Minimum of one year experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant in a hospital setting. Ophthalmic Assistant accredited training program Demonstrates AHS values of compassion, accountability, respect, engagement, safety. Ophthalmic Assistant may be required to work overtime hours depending on physician schedule.
