Job Description
Who we are:
POV’s mission is to champion diverse young people from traditionally underrepresented communities to develop their talent and creative passion into economic successes in the film, television, and content production industries. POV provides technical training, skills development, and social support to talented young people, who are driven and have a desire to work in these industries but lack relevant work experience and the financial capacity required to pursue their passions and aspirations.
Who you are:
You are an Indigenous creative with experience working on professional TV and film sets and are well equipped to train 20 Indigenous creatives to develop the skills and knowledge needed to work as a Production Assistant, and to manage a similar group to advise the work of the Indigenous Pathways project.
You have a diverse network of on-set film and television professionals that you can call upon to teach knowledge-specific modules (e.g., 1st AD, Production Coordinators, Locations Department, Art Department, Grip & Electric, etc.), and who you can recruit to contribute to elements of research for the Indigenous Pathways Project.
Your experiences and expertise are rooted in an Indigenous worldview and an anti-oppressive framework that acknowledges that intersecting identities and circumstances inform effective program design and supports.
Relying on your direct experience collaborating with Indigenous creatives and young people, you are effective in building rapport, assessing needs and supporting the journey of program participants as they achieve their goals. You are equipped to support program staff in managing participants’ needs and facilitating program content but will not shy away from crisis management when challenges emerge.
With previous programming experience, you bring existing connections with Indigenous-led agencies, institutions and organizations, and communities that can provide relevant support for program participants. You have access to a vibrant network that can help navigate the industry, its practices and mobilize resources that can support Indigenous creatives.
You are enthusiastic and can quickly shift gears between strategic and executional work and enjoy the varying demands of building programming from the ground up through intentional collaboration amongst multiple stakeholders from community, industry and government.
About the role:
In collaboration and consultation with Indigenous-led community and industry partners, POV is running two streams of programming with emerging Indigenous creatives, as follows:
Production Assistant training program (PATP) for Indigenous youth: This 8-week program will provide the requisite technical skills, set etiquette and production knowledge needed to enter the TV, film and/or commercial industries as a Production Assistant. The Project Lead is responsible for leading program facilitation/instruction, consulting with POV’s Program Manager to coordinate guest lecturers, equipment and resources, and successfully deliver the PATP to 20 indigenous participants. After the eight weeks of training, the Project Lead will be responsible for coordinating participant placements on professional sets over the course of four weeks. This program, including post-program support, will run from September-December 2023.
Coordination Support | Indigenous Creative Pathways Project: Through collaboration with and under the guidance of Indigenous-led industry partners and emerging Indigenous creatives, this project is seeking to develop ways to improve access to and mobility within the local and regional labour market for Indigenous creatives and professionals of Toronto’s creative industries. In this role, you will have the opportunity to support (with other project partners) programming activities including interviews, focus groups and other consultations with various community and creative industry collaborators. You will also be responsible for convening and managing an Indigenous Youth Advisory Council to help guide this work. This project is in its groundwork stages and will be ongoing.
