Position Description:
The Faculty Counsellor will play a key role on the Counselling & Student Well-Being team by providing mental health supports for students and contributing to health & wellness initiatives at the College.
Key Responsibilities:
Works collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary student service team to provide mental health support to students. Provides one-on-one counselling services to students on an appointment and drop-in basis. Utilizes counselling approaches effective in a post-secondary setting operating within a stepped care service environment.
- Carries a caseload of 2SLGBTQIA+ students.
- Provides specialized counselling services primarily, but not exclusively, to 2SLGBTQIA+ students.
- Carries out intake and triage assessments, engages in community referrals, and connects with other college staff to support students as needed.
- Engages in outreach and relationship building within the College and with community-based service providers to provide effective referrals to meet student mental health and wellbeing needs.
- Provides crisis response and case management support as needed, working collaboratively with other members of the counselling and student well-being team, accessible learning services team, student conduct team, security team, residence, etc.
- Participates in therapeutic groups and psychoeducational workshops on a range of health and wellness topics including self-regulation, stress reduction, healthy relationships, etc.
- Delivers presentations to a variety of audiences on mental health, wellness, and counselling services.
- Participates in the production of reports on activities performed in relation to the role and services provided.
- Other duties as assigned.
- This role is a hybrid work model with some work being conducted remotely and some on-campus.
Experience and Education Requirements:
Master’s degree in Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Counselling Psychology, or Clinical Psychology and current registration to practice psychotherapy in the province of Ontario. Must be fully licensed and in good standing with a regulatory College (e.g., OCSWSSW, COTO, OCP, CRPO).
- Direct professional and/or lived experience providing counselling services and/or support to 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.
- Demonstrated knowledge of gender affirming care, community resources, and best practices in providing counselling services to 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.
- Demonstrated understanding of heterosexism, cissexism, and other oppressions and how they impact individuals and their families.
- Experienced mental health clinician with extensive clinical and/or community experience and advanced counselling skills in delivering group and individual counselling services.
- Extensive experience collaborating with community organizations/resources, hospital-based program, and other community-based service providers (e.g., housing, social assistance, crisis services, etc.).
- In-depth understanding of critical issues in student mental health, e.g., anxiety, depression, substance use, sexual violence, emotional dysregulation, etc.
- Experience providing counselling in a post-secondary environment preferred.
- Current understanding of privacy legislation and its application to counselling service setting.
- Experience with producing reports on service delivery.
Skills and Attributes:
Advanced skills in counselling modalities relevant in an educational setting, e.g., CBT, DBT, solution focused/brief counselling, MBCT/MBSR, ACT, etc. Experience and/or training in single session counselling models a considerable asset.
- Advanced skills in crisis response and suicide risk assessment and safety planning necessary.
- Proactive, collaborative team member with highly effective emotional intelligence skills. Successful experience working collaboratively on interdisciplinary teams. Adaptable working style that allows transition between different work partners, stakeholders, and community members.
- Efficient and effective skills in case notes, administrative tasks, and work skills.
- Commitment to diversity and equity, trauma-informed and anti-oppressive orientation.
- Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.
